TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's lacrosse team earned its second consecutive overtime victory in league play, coming back to defeat Stony Brook 13-12 in OT to move to 2-0 in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) games.
Towson (3-5, 2-0 CAA), down three late in the third quarter, scored five of the final six goals vs. Stony Brook (4-5, 0-2 CAA), with
Josh Webber scoring off the pass from
Chop Gallagher 45 seconds into the overtime period.
With the victory, Towson stands in a three-way tie for first place in the CAA through two games with Fairfield and Hofstra.
Key Stats:
- Towson outshot Stony Brook 47-35 in the game, including 28-13 after the first half. The Towson defense also held Stony Brook to 15-for-22 on clears.
- The Seawolves won the faceoff battle 18-10 and had 16 saves to Towson's nine.
- Mikey Weisshaar had another career games, scoring five goals and an assist, adding four ground balls. Chop Gallagher racked up four assists, including assisting the game-tying and game-winning goals. Josh Webber's goal was his lone score of the game, adding two ground balls.
- On defense, the win went to Luke Downs with nine saves. Sam Morin scooped up seven ground balls, caused four turnovers and scored a goal.
- As a team, Towson went 10-for-28 on faceoffs. Kai Lopez was 5-for-10 while Myles Quandt, in his collegiate debut, was 3-for-5.
- For Stony Brook, Brendan Marino scored five goals to lead all Seawolves. Robbie Smith took all 28 faceoffs for Stony Brook, winning 18 with 11 ground balls and a goal. The loss was given to Jamison Maclachlan despite 16 saves.
How It Happened:
- Stony Brook, taking advantage of a couple of faceoff wins, scored the first two goals of the game in the opening three-and-a-half minutes.
- Towson got on the board, using its ride to force failed clears for Stony Brook. Towson focused on getting close to the cage as Owen Scott broke the ice with a goal on the doorstep to bring Towson within one.
- Mikey Weisshaar made a couple of highlight reel goals, faking off a defender and scoring inside left post, then later jumped over the goal mouth while scoring to put Towson ahead 3-2 with 3:48 left in the first. Stony Brook added one back a minute later to make it 3-3, the eventual end of first quarter score.
- Towson's defense held off Stony Brook's offense for several minutes, as the Tigers retook the lead. Alex Roussel hit a shot in the corner on a run from behind the cage, then minutes later, Weisshaar hit another on a catch and shoot as Towson lead 5-3 with 8:41 to play in the first half.
- The side exchanged goals over the next couple of minutes as Towson added its scores on a caused turnover, clear and shot from Sam Morin on the LSM, then Weisshaar added another on a heater inside the post as Towson led 7-5.
- Stony Brook scored two late goals in the final minutes of the half, including the fourth by Brendan Marino, to tie the game at 7-7 into the break.
- The Seawolves retook the lead minutes into the third quarter with a Richie Dechiaro goal in traffic. Minutes later, the visitors scored two goals in a span of 14 seconds to go up 10-7 with 8:27 remaining in the third.
- Weisshaar ended the run with his fifth goal, getting one-on-one against his defender and scoring on a high-to-low shot with 5:19 to go in the third.
- Stony Brook added back the insurance goal on a behind-the-back shot by Marino, which was countered by Alex Vieni on a laser under the crossbar. Towson trailed 11-9 after three quarters.
- Into the fourth, on a second chance man-up opportunity, Ronan Fitzpatrick scores on a catch and shoot from Chop Gallagher to pull within one. For several minutes, both sides exchanged possessions without scoring until with 6:55 left to play in regulation, Fitzpatrick scored on the run while being pushed to tie the game at 11.
- The Seawolves scored on the next possession to get back ahead. After peppering the goal the other side, Gallagher passed across the arc to Scott for a heave and goal, tying the game at 12-12 with 2:53 left.
- Each Towson and Stony Brook had chances in the final minutes of the fourth, but the game went into overtime.
- Myles Quandt won the faceoff as Towson set up the offense. A drop-off pass from Gallagher came to Josh Webber for the low shot and score 45 seconds into overtime as Towson took the golden goal victory 13-12.
