Softball Bests Hofstra in Pitchers Duel

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Towson University softball team played the second of a three-game road Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series against the Hofstra Pride. In a pitcher's duel that saw only one unearned run score in the game, Towson evened up the series with a 1-0 victory.

Hofstra – 2-18, 1-4 CAA
 
Key Stats:
  • Briyana Wright and Alyssa Myint were the only Tigers to record hits in the game with Myint hitting a double for Towson's only extra base hit.
  • Isabella Canesi drew a pair of walks.
  • Olivia Trombley started on the mound and pitched 6.0 shutout innings allowing 7 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout in the victory.
  • Cadence Williams entered the game with 2-on in the 7th and retired three straight batters to earn the save.
  • For Hofstra: Chelsea Villar was the only player in the game to have multiple hits, Sophia Polzella had a pinch hit double. Carley Ernst got the start and went the distance pitching all 7.0 innings allowing only 2 hits and 1 unearned run with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts in the loss.
How it Happened:
  • Carley Ernst started on the mound and worked around a 1-out walks to pitch a scoreless 1st.
  • Olivia Trombley induced a double play to face the minimum number of batters in the bottom of the inning.
  • Ernst hit a pair of Tigers in the top of the 2nd, but a fielder's choice ended the inning without a run.
  • Alanna Morse and Carmella Gallagher singled and Gallagher stole second to put runners on second and third with 2 outs, but Trombley kept the game scoreless with a groundout.
  • Cara Bohner reached on a fielder's choice and Briyana Wright singled to put 2 on with 1-out. Then Grace Franczyk reached on an error which allowed Bohner to score to put Towson up 1-0 in the 3rd inning.
  • Hofstra also put runners on first and second in the bottom of the inning, but Mackenzi Fitzgerald lined out to end the inning.
  • Alyssa Myint hit a leadoff double in the 4th but Ernst earned three straight outs to end the inning.
  • Trombley retired the Pride in order in the 4th inning.
  • Towson put two more runners on base in the top of the 5th, but Kaci Benton grounded out to end the half-inning.
  • Trombley worked around a 2-out single by Chelsea Villar to only face four batters in the home half of the 5th.
  • Ernst and Trombley both pitched a 1-2-3 6th innings.
  • Ernst sent the Tigers down in order again in the top of the 7th.
  • Trombley walked the leadoff batter in the 7th, and Sophia Polzella doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Cadence Williams then entered the game and got the first out on a pop-up to the catcher. Williams hit the next batter to load the bases, but Villar struck out and Dahlia Palacio lined out to left field to earn Williams the save and Towson the 1-0 win.

The series rubber match will take place tomorrow Sunday, March 16 with a noon start time scheduled.
