Towson Walked Off by George Mason at Spuhler Field

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Towson University baseball team faced George Mason on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
 
The Tigers (6-15) got out in front by way of Michael Mallas' solo home run in the third. The Patriots (14-7) tied the game in the home half. Two frames later, the Tigers retook the lead at 3-1 before Mason cut it back to one in the bottom half. The Tigers extended their lead to 4-2 in the seventh before GMU tied the game at four in the bottom of the eighth. The Tigers left three runners stranded in the top of the ninth. In the bottom half, George Mason's infield single with the bases loaded won them the game on a walk off.
 
Key Stats
  • Towson reliever Max Simpson (1-4) took the loss with one earned run allowed on one hit and two walks in one inning of work.
  • George Mason reliever Daniel Elliott (2-0) earned the win after coming in to retire the final out of the top of the ninth inning.
 
How it Happened
  • Each team started the game scoreless through two frames.
  • Michael Mallas led off the top of the third inning with a home run to left field, putting the Tigers out in front.
  • George Mason tied the game in the bottom half on Hull's RBI single through the left side, scoring the runner from third.
  • The Tigers retook the lead in the top of the fourth with two runs on two hits. After Casey Bishop led off the inning with a single, he stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Jordan Peyton scored Bishop on an RBI groundout to second base. Later in the frame, Max D'Alessandro plated Cole Stefano to extend the lead to 3-1.
  • George Mason got one back in the home half, scoring a run on an errant throw to second base that was sent into the outfield on a bunt.
  • With runners on the corners in the top of the seventh, Francuzenko reached on a fielder's choice to score the runner from third, extending the lead to 4-2.
  • Mason tied the game in the bottom half on a two-run single through the left side with two runners in scoring position.
  • The Tigers loaded the bases in the top of the ninth but left the runners stranded to send it to the bottom of the ninth in a tie game.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom half, Hull's single to short scored the winning run for the Patriots, 5-4.

The Tigers host Massachusetts tomorrow at 3 p.m. at John B. Schuerholz Park before beginning the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) slate vs. Northeastern this weekend.
