D’Alessandro’s Historic Day at the Plate Powers Towson’s 20-15 Win over Massachusetts

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team hosted Massachusetts on Wednesday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park in Towson, Md.
 
The Minutemen (6-8-1,1-2 A10) took a lead in of the second inning, before the Tigers (7-15, 0-0 CAA) answered in the home half with 11 runs. The Minutemen cut their deficit to one with five runs in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth before a home run in the bottom half re-extended the lead to four. The Tigers held on over the final frames for a 20-14 win.
 
Key Stats
  • Towson reliever Nate Nabholz (3-0) recorded the win, allowing one earned run on two hits and one walk allowed in 2.1 innings. Nabholz struck out two.
  • Massachusetts starter Sam Belliveau (0-1) took the loss with six earned runs allowed on four hits and four walks in 1.1 innings pitched. Belliveau struck out one.
 
How it Happened
  • After a scoreless first inning, Massachusetts put up one on an RBI double to left from Toth to take a lead in the second.
  • In the bottom half, the Tigers scored 11 runs on six hits. Brady Nathison started things with a home run to left field to tie the game. After back-to-back walks, Jordan Peyton's single through the left side to take a one run lead. Another walk loaded the bases before Max D'Alessandro's single through the right plated two more, extending the Tiger lead to three. Two batters later, Brian Heckelman hit an RBI single through the left side. Moments later, Nathison earned his second RBI of the inning with a bases loaded walk. Ben Nugent followed that with a single to right field, scoring two runs. Ethan Brand capped the 11-run inning with a three-run homer to left field.
  • The Minutemen responded in the next frame, scoring five runs on four hits. They scored three on back-to-back home runs and two more on an RBI single to right center.
  • Massachusetts' Munoz hit his second home run in as many innings in the fourth, cutting the Towson lead to three.
  • The visitors added two more runs on two hits in the top of the fifth, cutting the Tiger lead to 11-10.
  • D'Alessandro hit a three-run homer in the home half to re-extend the Black & Gold's lead to four.
  • In the top of the sixth, Toth of the Minutemen hit a solo big fly to left field to make it 14-11.
  • Brady Nathison hit his second leadoff homer of the game to push the lead back to four in the home half.
  • Towson added four runs on six hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. Taye Robinson, Nathison, Brand and Cole Stefano each had RBI hits in the frame, pushing the lead to 19-11.
  • In the next frame, Willi's three-run home run to right field put the Minutemen back within five.
  • Brett Ahalt got in on the offensive action in the bottom half with an RBI single up the middle, making it 20-14.
  • The Minuteman added one more run in the top of the ninth before the final out was retired for a 20-14 Towson win.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Max D'Alessandro tied the all-time single game record for hits in program history with six in the game. He finished a triple short of the cycle and added five RBIs and four runs scored.
  • Brady Nathison finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored, both career highs. It was Nathison's first multi-RBI game of his career.
  • Ethan Brand batted 4-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored. He matched his RBI season-high and scored multiple runs for the first time this season.
  • Jordan Peyton recorded his 11th multi-hit game of the season, six more than the next closest Tiger. He extended his hitting streak to six games and his reached base streak to 12 games.
