Softball Hands Campbell its First Conference Loss with 2-1 Win

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team played the final of a three game Coastal Athletic Association series vs the Campbell Fighting Camels on Sunday. Strong pitching from Cadence Williams and Amanda Medina helped the Tigers snatch a 2-1 lead in the 5th and hold on to give Campbell its first conference loss and snap the Camel's 13 game winning streak.

  • Cara Bohner hit an RBI double.
  • Kristin Toland had a 2-3 day at the plate with a double.
  • Grace Franczyk picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly.
  • Elizabeth Yoskowitz hit a single and scored a run.
  • Cadence Williams got the start for Towson and pitched 4.0 innings allowing two hits and one run with four walks and three strikeouts.
  • Amanda Medina pitched 3.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen only two hits with one walk and four strikeouts to earn the win.
  • For Campbell: Madison Ford had an RBI knock and Allyiah Swiney hit 2-3. Katherine Serna started on the mound for the Camels and allowed only one hit over 2.0 innings. Megan Gregory pitched 4.0 innings out of the bullpen allowing three hits and two runs in the loss.
 
How it Happened:
  •  Cadence Williams started at pitcher for Towson and walked the leadoff batter. A sacrifice bunt and wild pitch moved the runner to third for Madison Ford who hit an RBI single to put Campbell ahead early.
  • Katherine Serna got the start for Campbell and pitched a scoreless 1st despite a two-out double from Kristin Toland.
  • A one-out walk was Williams only blemish in the top of the 2nd.
  • Taylor Broadbent and Alyssa Myint both drew walks to put two-on with two outs in the bottom of the 2nd, but Elizabeth Yoskowitz grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
  • It was William's turn to walk a pair of Camel's in the top of the 3rd, but she ended the inning with a flyout to keep the Tigers deficit at one.
  • Megan Gregory entered the game for Serna in the bottom of the 3rd and pitched around a two-out Toland single to keep Towson off the board.
  • Allyiah Swiney hit a leadoff single in the 4th, but Williams retired the next three batters to end the half-inning.
  • In the bottom of the 4th, Taylor Broadbent walked and stole second to put a runner in scoring position with two outs, but Gregory again kept Towson from scoring.
  • Amanda Medina entered the game for Williams in the 5th and sent Campbell down in order.
  • Yoskowitz hit a leadoff single to start the home half of the 5th and Briyana Wright's bunt popped into the air and fell in between four Campbell players allowing both runners to be safe. The next batter Cara Bohner hit a double off the wall to score Yoskowitz and tie the game. Two batters later Grace Franczyk hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Wright and give Towson a 2-1 lead.
  • Medina walked the leadoff batter in the top of the 6th and Devin Davis entered the game as a pinch runner at first. Amber Desena hit a soft groundball towards third base and beat Wright's throw, but Bohner threw to catcher Madyson Peters who was covering third base to catch Davis trying to advance an extra base. The next batter Swiney hit a single up the middle and it was Isabella Canesi's turn to throw a runner out trying to advance from first to third. Medina ended the inning with a groundout to preserve Towson's lead.
  • Gregory retired the Tigers in order in the bottom of the 6th.
  • Medina returned to the mound in the top of the 7th and got the first out of the inning with a flyout before striking out the next two batters to seal a 2-1 Towson victory.
 
On Deck:
The Tigers hit the road to makeup a midweek matchup at George Mason on Tuesday, March 25, the game is currently scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
