Softball Uses Big Fifth Inning to Defeat George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va.  – The Towson University softball team played a road midweek game at George Mason on Tuesday. Olivia Trombley and a four-run fifth inning led the Tigers to a 4-3 victory.

Records:
Towson – 14-15
George Mason – 13-18

Key Stats:
  • Cara Bohner had an RBI knock.
  • Alyssa Bostley and Kaci Bento both picked up an RBI.
  • Kristin Toland, Taylor Broadbent and Mackenzie Gorczyca all had a hit and a walk.
  • Olivia Trombley started for Towson and allowed five hits and two runs (one earned) over 5.0 innings with two walks and three strikeouts to earn the win.
  • For George Mason: Madi Sobota recorded two hits and an RBI and Kamryn Inman had a multi-hit game. Abbey Lane started on the mound and allowed only one hit over 3.0 innings. Harlowe Nigh gave up two hits and four runs over 2.0 innings out of the bullpen in the loss.

How it Happened:
  • Abbey Lane got the start for George Mason and a one-out second inning single by Taylor Broadbent was her only hit allowed over 3.0 innings.
  • Elyssa DeRosa hit a leadoff triple off Olivia Trombley in the bottom of the first and Madi Sobota hit an RBI single to put George Mason ahead early before later scoring on a groundout to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead.
  • Derosa and Sobota both reached base again in the bottom of the 3rd, but Trombley ended the inning with a pair of groundouts.
  • Harlowe Nigh entered the game for Lane in the fourth and sent Towson down in order.
  • Trombley walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 4th, but when the next batter Kamryn Inman hit a single Broadbent threw the leadoff runner out at second. Despite a two-out infield single to put runners on the corners, Trombley struck out the next batter to end the inning scoreless.
  • Broadbent drew a leadoff walk in the top of the 5th and Paige Kostick entered to pinch run. Mackenzie Gorczyca hit a single and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. A passed ball allowed Kostick to score, and an error brought home Gorczyca to tie the game 2-2. Alyssa Bostley's RBI groundout and Cara Bohner's run scoring single added two more runs and made it a 4-2 Towson lead.
  •  A two-out walk was Trombley's only blemish in the bottom of the inning.
  • Towson got a pair of two-out baserunners on in the top of the 6th, but Haleigh Dellow ended the inning with a fielder's choice force-out.
  • Faith McCullough entered from the bullpen for Trombley in the bottom of the 6th and allowed two straight singles before a fielder's choice and double play retired the side.
  • Kristin Toland's one-out single didn't lead to any insurance runs for the Tigers in the 7th inning.
  • A single and error put two runners on for the Patriots with zero outs on the bottom of the 7th, then a pair of flyouts allowed the lead runner to advance to third then score to make it 4-3. Then Cadence Williams induced a third consecutive flyout to close out the 4-3 Towson victory.
