TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team continued its first home Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series of the season vs. Monmouth on Saturday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park.
The Hawks (12-14, 2-3 CAA) took a one-run lead in the top of the first for the second-straight day, scoring on Caufield's single up the middle. The Tigers (9-18, 2-3 CAA) tied the game in the bottom of the second and took a one-run lead in the third. Monmouth tied the game at two in the next frame before taking a two-run lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Hawks pushed their lead to three in the sixth before
Cole Stefano's solo home run in the home half cut the score to 5-3. Towson put two runners on in the seventh but couldn't convert a run over the final three frames to set up Sunday's rubber match at Schuerholz Park.

- Towson starter Max Simpson (1-6) took the loss with four earned runs allowed on six hits and two walks in 4.0 innings pitched. Simpson struck out two batters.
- Monmouth reliever Kevin Opanel (1-2) earned the win with one earned run allowed on three hits in two innings of work. Derek Benzinger (2) recorded the save, tossing 2.2 perfect frames to close the game.
How it Happened
- Monmouth took a 1-0 lead in the first inning for the second time in as many days, with Padden scoring from second on Caufield's single up the middle.
- AJ Kolb responded in the bottom of the second, knocking in Brett Ahalt from second on a single through the right side. Kolb recorded his first collegiate RBI on the play.
- With a runner on third in the home half of the third, Cole Stefano's single to left field gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
- Nick Lovarco answered in the next frame, tying the game with a lead-off home run to left field.
- In the top of the fifth, Jay Bant 's two-run homer to right field gave the Hawks a 4-2 lead.
- Monmouth tacked on another run in the top of the sixth on Padden's sacrifice fly to right field.
- Cole Stefano responded in the home half with a lead-off home run, the first of his career.
- The Tigers had three base runners over the final four frames but couldn't plate any runs to fall 5-3.
