Towson Falls to Longwood in Opening Game of DMV Classic

TYSONS, Va. – The Towson University baseball team faced Longwood in the first game of the DMV Classic Friday afternoon at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va. The Lancers (4-9) scored multiple runs in the fifth and seventh innings to go on to win, 6-4, over the Tigers (4-9).
 
Max D'Alessandro hit his third home run of the year.
 
Key Stats
  • Towson starter Max Simpson (1-3) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks in 6.0 innings pitched. Simpson struck out four batters.
  • Longwood starter Guillermo Garcia Jr. (2-2) earned the win with three earned runs allowed on six hits and one walk in 6.2 innings of work. Garcia Jr. struck out five. Longwood reliever Wyatt Bunch earned the save with one earned run on one hit in 2.1 innings pitched. Bunch struck out one.
  • Longwood outhit Towson 11-7, with three Lancers recording multiple hits.
 
How it Happened
  • Longwood started the scoring in the bottom of the second on back-to-back hits, a single and a double, to get out to a 1-0 lead.
  • Towson answered in the next frame with a sacrifice fly from Jordan Peyton to score Casey Bishop.
  • The Tigers took the lead in the top of the fourth on Max D'Alessandro's leadoff home run to center field.
  • The Lancers took a 4-2 lead with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Bishop scored Heckelman with an RBI single to left center in the top of the seventh, cutting the deficit to one.
  • Longwood plated two more in the bottom of the seventh on three hits to extend the lead to 6-3.
  • D'Alessandro's sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth scored Peyton to cut the deficit back to two.
  • The Tigers went down in order in the final frame to fall, 6-4.
