Softball Loses to Stony Brook in Second Game of Weekend Series

TOWSON, Md – The Towson University softball team played the second of a three-game series against Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) foes Stony Brook. The Tigers couldn't hold an early lead and lost 8-7 to the Seawolves to set up a rubber match tomorrow Sunday, March 9.

  • Kristin Toland hit 2-4 with 2 RBIs.
  • Madyson Peters hit her third homerun of the season.
  • Alyssa Myint recorded a pair of hits.
  • Jenna Giattino and Isabella Canesi both had a hit and an RBI.
  • Briyana Wright drew 3 walks.
  • Olivia Trombley started for Towson and pitched 4.0 innings allowing 4 hits and 3 earned runs, Cadence Williams was perfect over 2.1 innings out of the bullpen, Alyssa Bostley earned the loss allowing 4 hits and 5 earned runs over 0.2 of an inning.
  • For Stony Brook: eight of the nine batters recorded a hit with 5 Seawolves driving in a run and Mia Vannelli leading the way with 2 RBIs. Crimson Rice got the start and allowed 3 hits and 4 earned runs over 1.2 innings, Gabrielle Maday picked up the win after pitching 3.1 innings of relief allowing 3 hits and no runs with 3 strikeouts.
 
How it happened:
  • A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out for Stony Brook in the top of the 1st. A Mia Vannelli single and Emma Scheitinger fielder's choice each drove in a run to make it 2-0 Stony Brook in the 1st.
  • Both teams went down in order in the bottom of the 1st and top of the 2nd.
  • Madyson Peters led off the bottom of the 2nd with a solo homerun to cut the lead in half.
  • A pair of walks, a fielder's choice and a single loaded the bases with one out. With two outs Jenna Giattino drew an RBI walk to tie the game, then Kristin Toland hit a 2-run single to put Towson ahead 4-2.
  • After a scoreless 3rd inning, Emma Scheitinger hit a leadoff single advanced to third from sacrifice bunt and groundout, then scored from a wild pitch to cut Towson's lead to one.
  • The Tigers loaded the bases with 2 outs for Grace Franczyk who reached on a fielding error that allowed 2 runs to score. The next batter Isabella Canesi hit a RBI single to put Towson up 7-3 going into the 5th inning.
  • Naiah Ackerman drew a leadoff walk in the 5th, then scored from an Alyssa Costello RBI double. Three batters later, Scheitinger hit an RBI groundout scoring Costello. In the next three at-bats, Malorie Hill singled, and Emily Reinstein and Marissa Thalassinos both doubled to each drive in a run to cap off a 5-run inning and give Stony Brook an 8-7 lead.
  • Elizabeth Yoskowitz and Giattino walked and doubled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs in the 5th. But Gabriella Maday struck out a pair to end the inning with no Towson runs scoring.
  • Neither Maday nor Cadence Williams allowed a hit in the 6th inning.
  • Williams pitched her second consecutive 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 7th.
  • Kristin Toland hit a 1-out single in the bottom of the second but Maday closed the game out to defeat Towson 8-7.

The Tigers and the Seawolves will break the series tie tomorrow Sunday, March 9 with the game scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
