Softball Loses Game Two of Weekend Series at Charleston

TOWSON, Md – The Towson University softball team played the second of a three-game series against Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) rival Charleston. The Tigers lost to the Cougars for the second straight game by a score of 9-1 in six innings.

Key Stats:
  • Charleston's Mackenzie Mathis earned the win pitching all 6.0 innings and allowing only three hits and one run with two walks and five strikeouts.
  • Olivia Trombley receives the loss after allowing nine hits and eight runs over 4.0 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
 
How it happened:
  •  The Tigers struck first in the top of the 1st as Briyana Wright drew a leadoff walk and two batters later Grace Franczyk hit an RBI triple to put Towson up 1-0.
  • Charleston responded in the bottom of the second. Olivia Trombley got two quick outs before a single and a walk put two runners on for Halle Cannon who hit an RBI single to tie the game 1-1. Jay Wrightsman followed that up with an RBI single of her own before Austy Miller hit a two-run single to give Charleston a 4-1 lead. After another single Leela Langston hit the second two-run single of the inning to make it 6-1 Cougars.
  • Charleston starting pitcher Mackenzie Mathis faced the minimum number of batters between the 3rd and 5th innings.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the 3rd Cannon hit a solo-homerun to push Charleston's lead to 7-1.
  • Miller hit a leadoff single in the home half of the 4th and stole second before advancing to third on a groundout. Then Langston hit an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 8-1 Cougars.
  • Kayla Pilson entered to pitch for Towson and sent Charleston down in order in the bottom of then 5th, but in the 6th inning the first two batters reached on a walk and bunt single. The next batter Miller singled to right field and Taylor Broadbent threw the lead runner out at home. But after a double steal Kennedy Rhue hit an RBI single to end the game in the 6th inning with Charleston winning 9-1.
