ELON, N.C. – The Towson University baseball team faced Elon in the final game of a three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Latham Park in North Carolina.
After Elon (13-22, 5-7 CAA) jumped out to a 4-1 lead through three frames, the Tigers (13-23, 5-7 CAA) answered and tied the game in the top of the fourth. After three scoreless innings in the fifth, sixth and seventh, The Phoenix added two runs on three hits in the top of the eighth to go on to win 6-4 over the Tigers.
Key Stats
- Towson reliever Kyle Emmons (1-2) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on three hits in 1.0 inning pitched. Emmons struck out one and walked one.
- Elon arm Sam Nomura (1-0) earned the win after tossing one perfect frame in relief. Reliever Ryan Sprock (1) earned the save with another clean frame, striking out one.
How it Happened
- The Tigers got out in front in the top of the first inning as Brian Heckelman's single to right center scored Brett Ahalt after his one-out double earlier in the frame.
- Elon tied the game and took the lead in the bottom half. Sprock hit a solo home run to left field before Fattore's double to left center with a runner on first delivered a one-run Phoenix lead.
- Elon added two runs on two hits in the bottom of the third. Duffey singled to right center with two runners on to score the first. Fattore's subsequent fielder's choice pushed Elon's lead to 4-1.
- Towson tied the game in the next frame, as an Ethan Brand walk and Josh Janove single to left field put two runners on with one out. The next batter, Casey Bishop, doubled down the left field line to plate the two runners and cut the deficit to one. Jorda Peyton followed with a single to right center to score Bishop and tie the game.
- The fourth, fifth and sixth innings were scoreless as pitchers combined to allow just three hits over the stretch.
- With runners on second and third in the bottom of the eighth, a wild pitch gave the Phoenix a 5-4 lead. A Vergantino double to left center later in the frame extended the lead to two.
- The Tigers went down in order in the top of the ninth for a 6-4 Elon win in the series rubber match.
