Ninth Inning Run Delivers 3-2 Win to Baseball over Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Towson University baseball team faced Campbell in Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play on Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium in Buies Creek, N.C. 
 

Towson (14-30, 6-12 CAA) struck first in the third inning, scoring two runs on two hits and one error.  

Campbell (18-24, 9-9 CAA) cut the lead to one in the bottom half and tied the game in the next inning. The Tigers got the winning run across in the ninth inning by way of a bases-loaded walk to give them the 3-2 road win. 

Key Stats 

  • Towson reliever Nate Nabholz (4-0) earned the win, tossing 4.0 two-hit, scoreless frames. Nabholz struck out five. Kyle Emmons picked up his second save of the season after allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning. 

  • Campbell reliever Lleyton Grubich (2-2) took the loss, allowing one earned run on one hit and three walks in 0.2 innings pitched. Grubich struck out one. 

How it Happened 

  • The Tigers struck first in the top of the third inning. After Ethan Brand's single and Jordan Peyton's walk, a fielding error by the shortstop allowed Brand to score. Peyton scored on the following at-bat, Brett Ahalt's double to left center. 

  • Campbell cut Towson's lead to one in the bottom half on Morton's RBI single to right. 

  • The Camels tied the game in the next inning, courtesy of Farini's RBI single to center. 

  • With two outs in the top of the ninth, two walks from Brand and Peyton, along with Brady Nathison's single loaded the bases. Brand scored on Nich Francuzenko's walk to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. 

  • Kyle Emmons retired three of four batters faced in the bottom of the ninth to deliver a 3-2 win to the Tigers. 

Inside the Numbers 

  • Brett Ahalt recorded his 12th double of the season, putting him in a tie for 14th in the CAA. 

  • Nate Nabholz has not allowed a run in his last five appearances, surrendering 11 hits over 16.1 relief innings. Nabholz struck out 13 over the span.

The Tigers will face George Washington on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Arlington, Va.
