NEWARK, Del. – The Towson University baseball team faced Delaware in two games on Saturday afternoon to close the series at Bob Hannah Stadium in Newark, Del.
A balanced effort from the Tigers (12-19, 4-4 CAA) earned them their first league series win of the season and the first series win on the road in CAA play since they won three of four vs. the Blue Hens (16-13, 4-4 CAA) in May of 2021.
Key Stats in Game One
- Towson starter Max Simpson (2-6) earned the win with five earned runs allowed on three hits and six walks in 5.2 innings pitched. Simpson struck out six.
- Delaware starter Ryan McLaughlin (1-3) took the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits and two walks in 3.0 innings pitched. McLaughlin struck out four.
How it Happened in Game One
- The Tigers struck early in the first inning, scoring two runs on Brett Ahalt's RBI double to left center field.
- Delaware took a two-run lead in the bottom of the second inning on Amato's grand slam.
- Towson retook the lead in the next frame, scoring one run on Brian Heckelman's RBI double to left and another on Taye Robinson's to right. Ahalt scored later in the frame on a wild pitch for a 5-4 lead.
- Jordan Peyton scored AJ Kolb on a single to left field, pushing the lead to two.
- Delaware's Stewart hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, cutting the Black & Gold's lead to one.
- Peyton re-extended the lead to 7-5 on an RBI groundout to third base in the top of the sixth.
- Heckelman hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, pushing Towson's lead to 9-5.
- The Blue Hens left a runner stranded in each of the final three frames to deliver a series victory in favor of the Tigers.
Inside the Numbers in Game One
- Nate Nabholz earned his first save of the season, tossing 3.1 scoreless frames with three hits allowed. Nabholz struck out two.
- Heckelman recorded his sixth game of the season with multiple runs batted in. He matched season highs with two runs scored and three RBIs in the game.
Delaware (17-13, 5-4 CAA) and Towson (12-20, 4-5 CAA) traded leads through the first six frames before Graeber's single through the left side with two runners in scoring position proved to be the difference in favor of the Blue Hens.
Key Stats in Game Two
- Towson reliever Jacob Whiteman (0-2) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks in 1.1 innings pitched. Whiteman struck out two.
- Delaware reliever Elias Conway (1-0) earned the win, tossing 2.2 hitless, scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Andrew Callaway picked up his first save of the season, pitching two perfect frames.
How it Happened in Game Two
- Delaware took a one-run lead in the bottom of the second on Donati's single to right field.
- Towson tied the game in the top of the fourth inning as Ahalt scored on a pair of wild pitches after a double to center field.
- The Tigers took a one-run lead in the top of the fifth inning on Heckelman's sacrifice fly to center field.
- The Blue Hens tied the game on an RBI from Bouldin in the bottom of the sixth inning.
- In the home half of the seventh, Graeber singled through the left side with runners on second and third to give Delaware a 4-2 lead.
- The Tigers went down in order in the final two frames to miss out on the league series sweep.
