TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team welcomed the Stony Brook Seawolves to John B. Schuerholz Park on Friday evening as both teams vie for a spot in the CAA Championship.

Towson (16-30, 7-12 CAA) scored early, taking a 5-0 lead into the seventh inning. Stony Brook (22-21, 8-11 CAA) added three runs on four hits in the frame before the Tigers got two runs back in the home half. In the eighth, TU added four more runs and retired the final three Seawolves for an 11-3 win.

  • Stony Brook starter Eddie Smink (1-4) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits in 4.0 innings pitched.

How it Happened
  • In the second, Brett Ahalt led off with a single and Max D'Alessandro reached first on catcher's interference. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up, allowing AJ Kolb to knock in Ahalt on a sacrifice fly to right field.
  • Jordan Peyton led off the third inning with a double before Nich Francuzenko hit a home run to right, making it a 3-0 Towson lead.
  • Peyton led off the fifth with his second double of the day and scored on Francuzenko's single up the middle. Brian Heckelman followed with a double to right, moving Francuzenko to third base. The freshman scored on the ensuing wild pitch, pushing the Tigers' lead to 5-0.
  • Stony Brook got on the board in the seventh inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Azpilcueta's home run scored the first two before Szepek's RBI fielder's choice.
  • In the home half, Francuzenko's reach on error and Heckelman's single to center put two runners on base. A failed pickoff attempt moved the runners up, who both scored on D'Alessandro's double to left field, extending Towson's lead to 7-3.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, AJ Kolb hit a one-out single before the game was suspended due to lightning in the area. Upon the return to play, Casey Bishop's RBI groundout and Heckelman's two-run homer pushed the lead to 11-3.
  • The final three Seawolf batters were retired to deliver a series opening win to the Tigers.
