GAINESVILLE, Fla. – First half goals by
Sydney Feiler and
Kale'a Perry helped the Towson University women's soccer team stay even with the University of Florida. But the Gators (1-1), who lost to No. 3 Florida State last week to open the season, scored twice in the second half for a 4-2 victory Thursday night at Donald Dizney Stadium in a game that featured a 130-minute weather delay.
The Tigers (1-1) were a player down for the last 41 minutes of the game – when Florida scored both second half goals.
Key Stats:
- Towson had just five shots in the opening half – yet scored twice.
- Feiler, an All-Metro player at nearby Mercy High School in 2022, scored her first collegiate goal in her 19th game. She spent her freshman season at VCU then played 16 games for Towson a year ago in a reserve role.
How It Happened:
- The Tigers had the first scoring opportunity 7:08 into the game when a corner resulted in Emma Levin's shot going off the post.
- Less than four minutes later, play was suspended at the 10:58 mark with lightning in the area.
- About 10 minutes after play resumed, Towson took a 1-0 lead – scoring in transition. Perry gathered the ball near midfield then raced down the left side before sending a cross to Feiler, who one-timed it into the back left corner at the 19:44 mark.
- Florida responded with a pair of goals in about two and a half minutes for a 2-1 advantage.
- The Tigers did not go away – scoring in the 42nd minute. Emely Rubio found Perry in the box. The graduate student beat her defender to the ball and beat Florida goalkeeper Paloma Pena to tie the game.
- Towson goalkeeper Teagan Gardner kept the game even after 45 minutes of play– denying Sophia Sindelar with less than 100 seconds left in the half.
- About eight minutes after the visitors went down a player, Gator freshman Katie Johnston, a U18/19 All-America, got behind the Tiger defense and scored her second goal of the game for a 3-2 lead.
- Florida added another goal during the 68th minute for the final margin.
Inside the Numbers:
- Gardner finished with a career-best six saves.
- Johnston, one of four Florida freshman on the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Preseason Watch List, finished with two goals and two assists.
- Towson had a 103-minute weather delay during the 5-0 season opening victory over Mount St. Mary's.
