Metil Eclipses 500 Career Wins Saturday over Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – The Towson University volleyball team concluded the Quest for the Crown on Saturday afternoon against the hosting Old Dominion Monarchs in Norfolk, Va.
 
The Tigers won the match in straight sets, marking their first win of the young season. Head Coach Don Metil earned his 500th career coaching win in the process.

  • The Tigers held a decisive .333 to .105 hitting percentage edge in the match.

How it Happened
  • Old Dominion held a 10-8 lead almost halfway through the first set before the Tigers scored seven straight to take a 15-10 lead.
  • With a 20-15 lead later in the set, Towson scored five of the final six points to win 25-16.
  • The second set was highly contested, win neither team going on a run of more than three points.
  • Up 17-16 late in the set, three straight Towson points extended the lead to four.
  • The Monarchs cut it to a one-point deficit at 23-22 before a Monarch attack error and Taylor Pagan kill delivered the set two win to the Tigers.
  • Towson started the final set with four straight points before allowing ODU to cut the TU lead to one at 5-4.
  • Knotted at 7-7, the Tigers scored five straight to push gain an edge in the set.
  • Later in the third, a 7-1 Towson run extended the lead to ten points.
  • The Black & Gold closed the set on a 5-1 run to win the match, 3-0.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • In his 24th season coaching NCAA volleyball, Don Metil eclipsed 500 career wins in today's match over ODU. Metil has amassed 270 wins at Towson, along with 145 at UMES, 15 at Coppin State, 30 at Lees-McRae and 40 at Notre Dame (Md.).
  • Ella Sanders recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs.
 
Up Next
The Tigers return to SECU Arena in the second weekend to play host in the Towson-Morgan State Invite. They'll face Stonehill, Quinnipiac, New Orleans and Kent State between Friday and Saturday.
