Field Hockey Shuts Out Queens for 2-0 Win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Towson University field hockey team travelled to Bessant Field in Charlotte, North Carolina to take on Queens University. Two first half goals were the difference as Towson defeated the Royals 2-0 to bring its record back to .500.

How it Happened:
  • Bailey Masten won Towson a corner in the first minute, the ball was delivered to Lydia Bennett who played the ball across the goal and just outside the right post.
  • Midway through the first quarter, Ella Kaufman carried into the left side of Queen's circle and saw her shot blocked, but it was controlled by Ava McConnell who placed a shot under the stick of Royal goalie Madison Destefano to give Towson an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Tigers won another corner late in the first, and Megan Popps shot was knocked back by Destefano, Paige Miller's follow-up found the net, but the goal was ruled out due to a foul on Towson keeping the score at 1-0 entering the second quarter.
  • Early in the second quarter with Towson in possession, Rosemarie Staal took the ball outside the top of the circle. Staal carried into the circle, spun around a defender and fired a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal to double Towson's lead.
  • Midway through the second quarter, a pass down the left sideline found Tatum Dobbins for Towson who passed to Olivia Miller who carried across the top of the circle and took a shot that was saved by the stick of Destefano.
  • Both sides defenses limited the remaining chances of the half and Towson took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
  • The Tigers created a quick chance in the third quarter as Kaufman found Dobbins in the center of the circle who passed to Olivia Miller at the corner of the goal, but Destefano kept the ball out.
  • Queens responded with a chance of its own as Jarmilla Richter's pass from the top of the circle went to Enya Kemp just in front of the Towson net, but Tessa Scheenstra swept the shot away.
  • Late in the third quarter, Towson won three consecutive corners, on the third the delivery went to Staal who passed across the circle to Megan Popp whose shot was kicked away by Destefano.
  • A minute later Ella Kaufman carried the ball into the top of the circle and ran across a defender before firing a shot that beat Destefano but rang off the right post of the goal. Towson's lead held at 2-0 entering the fourth quarter.
  • Towson entered the fourth quarter aggressive as Kaufman won the ball in midfield and carried to just outside Queen's circle before escaping two defenders and playing a ball to the center of the circle, but no Tiger could squeeze it past Destefano.
  • Towson would hold possession, and the ball found Olivia Miller who carried from the right side of the circle before taking a shot in front of the goal that was again saved by Destefano.
  • Midway through the fourth quarter Grace Conklin carried down the right sideline and found Kaufman in the circle whose shot was kicked away by Destefano.
  • A few minutes later an Anouk Westerink free hit went to Dakotah Trader right in front of goal whose shot was snuffed out by the Royal's keeper. The score would hold from there as Towson defeated Queens 2-0.

The Tigers now return home for a five game homestand, beginning with a matchup on Friday, September 19 at 3 p.m. when Towson will host VCU.
