Fourth Quarter Goals Lead to Field Hockey Loss to VCU

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University field hockey team hosted VCU in a nonconference matchup on Friday. A pair of fourth quarter goals from the Rams saw the Tigers fall by a score of 3-1

  • For VCU: Morena Macera scored two goals and Josephine Jense scored one, Josefina Ventimiglia and Lina Behrmann each had an assist. Emma Clements earns the win allowing one goal with three saves.
 
How it Happened:
  • The first minute of the first quarter saw the Rams bring the ball down the left sideline with a cross leading to a deflection shot from Manuela Secondo which was batted away by Tessa Scheenstra.
  • With five minutes to play in the first, VCU earned the games first corner and Lina Behrmann delivered to Josefina Ventimiglia who laid the ball off to Morena Macera whose shot got over the dive of Scheenstra to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
  • Multiple Towson shots in the final five minutes of the quarter failed to find the net as the first period ended with the Tigers down a goal.
  • Two minutes into the second quarter, a Josephine Jense shot from the top of the circle was saved by Scheenstra. The ensuing Towson possession led to an Ella Kaufman shot that was stopped by Rams goalie Emma Clements.
  • In the final three minutes of the half the Rams earned another corner, but Macera's shot went high as the half ended with VCU still leading 1-0.
  • VCU won a corner seconds into the third quarter and Jense was again denied by Scheenstra.
  • Midway through the third period with Towson in possession Rosemarie Staal played a ball to the circle that was tipped past two rams by Olivia Miller and fell for Kaufman who ripped a shot into the top corner of the goal to bring the game back even.
  • Near the end of the quarter, the Rams played the ball down the left side and into the circle when a deflected pass fell to Callie Dieffenbacher whose shot was stopped on the line by Scheenstra. The ensuing moments saw VCU get the ball across the goal line, but the referee ruled out the goal due to a foul on the Rams and the game remained 1-1 entering the fourth quarter.
  • Kaufman brought the ball down the right sideline and into the circle in the first minute of the fourth quarter but her shot hit the side of the goal.
  • Midway through the final quarter, VCU earned a corner and shots from Macera and Mackenzie White were denied by Scheenstra but the Rams earned a penalty stroke and Macera converted to give VCU a 2-1 lead.
  • A minute later VCU held possession in the middle of the field, and the ball came to Jense who carried into the top of the circle and fired a shot into the bottom corner of the goal to double the Ram's lead.
  • Towson earned a corner in the final five minutes of the game, but Lydia Bennett's shot went wide, and the game ended with a 3-1 win for VCU.

The Tigers stay at home this weekend and will host Rider on Sunday, September 21 at noon.
