Big First Quarter Lifts Field Hockey Over Rider

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University field hockey team hosted Rider in a non-conference game on Sunday, September 21. First quarter goals from Rosemarie Staal and Ella Kaufman proved the difference as the Tigers defeated the Broncos 2-1.

  • Ella Kaufman scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
  • Rosemarie Staal found the goal for the third time this year.
  • Tessa Scheenstra earned the win allowing one goal with three saves.
  • For Rider: Anna Finn scored a goal with Semra Said and Valeria Perales picking up assists. Jade Renart receives the loss allowing two goals with seven saves.
 
How it Happened:
  • Towson won the games first corner less than two minutes into the first period and Roos Wiarda's effort was blocked by a defender, but the ball fell to Rosemarie Staal who scored to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.
  • Rider won its first corner a few minutes later but Megan Normile's shot didn't make it to Towson's goal.
  • With 90 seconds left in the quarter, Olivia Miller carried into the Rider circle and fired a low shot that was kicked away by Bronco goalie Jade Regnart, but the ball went to Ella Kaufman who shot and scored to give Towson a 2-0 lead entering the second quarter.
  • Both sides earned corners in the first half of the second quarter but couldn't find the goal.
  • Late in the second, Arden Hunteman received a pass in the midfield and carried into the top of the circle and past multiple defenders, but he shot was knocked away by Regnart.
  • Towson earned a corner in the final two minutes of the half, Dakota Trader delivered and the ball was passed right back to Trader whose shot was saved by Regnart as the Tigers 2-0 lead held into halftime.
  • Rider created a quick chance in the first minute of the second half and Valeria Perales's shot from the top of the circle was stopped and swept away by Tessa Schenstra.
  • The Tiger's earned back-to-back corners midway through the third quarter and the second delivery was laid off to Lydia Bennett whose shot went wide of the right post.
  • Both teams earned corners in a two-minute stretch late in the third period, Anna Finn shot wide for Rider and Bennett's shot was saved by Regnart.
  • Rider earned a corner with thirteen seconds left in the period, the delivery from Perales was laid off by Semra Said for Finn whose shot bounced over Scheenstra and into the goal to make it 2-1 Towson entering the final period.
  • A Tiger corner four minutes into the corner saw Trader deliver to Wiarda who was denied Towson's third by Regnart.
  • With under four minutes left in the game, Rider substituted Regnart for an extra outfield player and the numerical advantage saw a pass down the right sideline find Said who carried into the right side of Towson's circle and attempted to slip a low shot into the far corner, but the effort was swept away by Scheenstra.
  • Rider earned a corner in the final minute of the game; Finn's shot was ruled out by the referee and the game ended in a 2-1 win for Towson.
 
Next Up:
The Tigers stay at home next week and open Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play as Towson hosts Northeastern on Friday, September 26 at 4 p.m., Friday's matchup will also be the annual Own Your Roar game.
