How it Happened
  • Towson started on offense and quickly came down the field with an Andrew Indorf 19-yard pass to Bryce Butler followed by a 22-yard burst from Al Wooten II to pull to the Youngstown 12.  After being stopped after a couple of runs, the field goal attempt hit the upright.  The other way, YSU's running game brought the visitors into Towson territory, then a 20-yard pass to Kylon Wilson got the Penguins to the red zone.  Later, Beau Brungard barreled into the end zone for the touchdown as YSU led 7-0 with 4:21 left in the first.
  • Next drive, Indorf was intercepted on a deep pass, then Towson forced a three-and-out.  Into the second quarter, a heave to Jaceon Doss got 51 yards to the YSU 2, where Wooten II finished the drive on a rush to the end zone.  The game was tied 7-7, 14:10 left in the second.
  • Another three-and-out, led by Elijah Tarlton breaking up a pass at the line, sent Towson back to offense.  Seeing a fourth and eight, Bryce LaFollette ran on the fake punt for 19 yards and a first into YSU territory.  The razzle dazzle continued as a backwards pass to John Dunmore led to Dunmore throwing to an open Kemarrion Battles in the end zone for 33 yards and a score, pushing Towson ahead 13-7 with 8:03 left in the second.
  • A couple of QB rushes for YSU, then a 10-yard pass to Fresh Walters, got the Penguins back into Towson territory.  Going for it on fourth and two, Jasin Shiggs and Myles Brodie stacked up the quarterback for one-yard short and a turnover on downs.
  • Each side had one more drive in the first half, with Towson holding on a final YSU pass to the end zone with Zay Perkins breaking up the pass.  Towson led 14-7 at the break.
  • Wilson returned the second half opening kickoff 76 yards to the Towson 23 for Youngstown.  A pass interference penalty gave the home team a new set of downs on the Towson 7, getting to the two for fourth down.  A short pass to Alex McDonald tied the game at 14-14, 12:11 to go in the third.
  • Towson responded in a big way, again using some tricks.  At fourth and five at the Towson 45, punter LaFollette passed to Jarvis Jones for 14 yards to extend the drive.  Towson had to face fourth down again, with one to go on the YSU 21 as Battles barreled to the right for two yards and the first.  Next play, Indorf fired a dart across the middle to Dunmore for the 19-yard touchdown and a 21-14 Towson led with 6:09 to play in the third.
  • Youngstown continued the QB rushes with a 20-yard one getting to the Towson 21.  Towson held on short passes, with Brodie breaking up an intended pass to Jaden Gilbert on third down.  The 27-yard field goal by YSU made it 21-17 Towson heading into the fourth quarter.
  • After a roughing the passer penalty got Towson to the edge of YSU territory, a 54-yard pass to Doss brought Towson to the 1-yard line. Wooten II finished it with a burst up the middle as Towson led 28-17 with 12:09 to play.
  • Towson had YSU on fourth down and one at the YSU 45, but a 10-yard QB run converted the downs.  Two passes combined for 36 yards got YSU inside the 10, and two plays later, another QB run for a touchdown, then a two-point conversion, brought the Penguins within three and 28-25 Towson with 6:21 left.
  • Towson had a three-and-out and the Penguins got back the ball.  17 and 16-yard passes brought YSU to the Towson 33 and the two-minute timeout.  Towson forced pressure and incomplete passes, but a 48-yard field goal by Andrew Lastovka tied the game at 28 with 1:37 left.
  • Towson got a 10-yard pass to Sam Reynolds but was stopped from more progress, ending on a sack.  Youngstown State, with 37 seconds left, got to midfield, then got a 25-yard pass to RK Dandridge to set up a final try.  The 42-yard field goal from Lastovka hit as Youngstown State won 31-28.
