TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University field hockey team closed out its season opening four-game homestand against the Sacred Heart Pioneers. The Tigers scored in each of the final three quarters to earn a 3-1 win over the Pioneers.

- Anouk Westerink scored for the second straight game.
- Ella Kaufman scored her first goal of the season.
- Lydia Bennett converted a penalty stroke for her first score of the season.
- Tessa Scheenstra earns the win allowing only one goal with 13 saves including seven in the fourth quarter.
- For Sacred Heart: Hailey Vogt scored a penalty stroke, Ruby Butler receives the loss allowing one goal with two saves, Brianna Cooper took over in goal in the second half and allowed two goals with one save.
How it Happened:
- Sacred Heart earned a corner in the first minute of the game, the ball eventually was played to Bell Mazza whose shot from the top of the circle required Tessa Scheenstra's first save of the game.
- Midway through the first, Towson earned its first corner, Dakotah Trader passed to Lydia Bennett who fired a shot that was knocked aside by Pioneer goalie Ruby Butler. The game remained scoreless as the first quarter ended.
- Sacred Heart again earned a corner in the first minute of the second quarter, the delivery was set for Blair Sparks who was denied by a diving Scheenstra.
- With five minutes left in the first half, Olivia Miller carried the ball into the right side of the circle and passed across goal to Grace Conklin whose shot was batted down by Butler, but it fell back to Conklin who earned a penalty stroke for Towson. Lydia Bennett's shot went into the top left corner of the goal to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
- With the final minute of the first half winding down, Sparks carried the ball into the right side of the Tiger circle and got around a defender, but her shot was smothered by Scheenstra and Towson held its one-goal lead into halftime. Brianna Cooper entered as Sacred Hart goalie for the second half.
- Towson came out in the third quarter on the attack; a free hit pass went to Ella Kaufman just past midfield who ran around a Pioneer and played a ball into the middle of the circle and only the post denied Bailey Masten's deflection from becoming Towson's second score.
- Towson quickly regained possession and earned a corner; Trader's delivery was set for Roos Wiarda whose ball towards goal was deflected by Rosemarie Staal and saved by Cooper but the ball fell to Kaufman who scored her first of the season to double Towson's lead.
- With five minutes left in the quarter, a Pioneer corner was set for Sparks whose shot was knocked aside by Scheenstra and no Pioneer could get off a second shot as Towson's 2-0 lead held into the fourth quarter.
- Less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, Celia Benson carried the ball through the midfield for Sacred Heart and passed into the circle to Jocelyn Webber whose first time shot was pushed away by a sweeping Scheenstra.
- A few minutes later Miller won possession for Towson in the midfield and got the ball to Conklin who found Anouk Westerink who played around a defender and into the top of the circle before firing a shot past Cooper to make it 3-0 Tigers.
- Sacred Heart quickly won a corner after play resumed, Lizzie Day delivered, and the ball was hit back to Day whose deflection was denied by Scheenstra.
- A few minutes later, a wayward pass gave Sacred Heart's Jenna Baxter the ball in the circle with only Scheenstra to beat. The Tiger goalie knocked down Baxter's first shot but both players dive for the rebound resulted in a Pioneer penalty stroke, which was converted by Hailey Vogt to make it 3-1.
- With four minutes left in the game, a yellow card put Towson a player down for the rest of the game and Sacred Heart pulled Cooper to give the Pioneers a two-player advantage in the outfield.
- The Pioneers won a corner with a minute to play, and the delivery went to the left side of the circle and was sent towards goal and knocked aside by Scheenstra but the ball fell to DeAngelo who was twice denied by the senior and Towson held on for the 3-1 victory to move back to .500 on the season.
