Towson Defeats Charleston in Defensive Battle

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's basketball handed Charleston its first Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) loss of the season - winning 61-52 on Thursday night at SECU Arena.

KEY STATS
  • Tyler Coleman and Tyler Tejada led the team with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
  • Five players pulled down at least five rebounds with Jack Doumbia Jr. leading the way with seven boards.
  • Mor Seck blocked a season-best three shots - his third multi-block game of the season. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson scored the first four points of the game and never trailed, leading for 38:54.
  • The Tigers went on a 13-3 run to start the game, holding Charleston to one field goal for the first eight minutes and 39 seconds.
  • Towson maintained the advantage throughout the opening 20 minutes with Jaquan Womack's buzzer-beater putting the Tigers up 34-17 at the break. 
  • The home team built a 20-point advantage on two occasions during the opening minute of the second half before Charleston battled back to cut the lead to four (46-42) with 7:33 remaining.
  • Two straight buckets in the paint by Chike Ndefo keyed a 5-0 run that gave Pat Skerry's squad breathing room. 
  • Towson made 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch to earn the nine-point victory. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Coleman finished with 13 points and six rebounds. In the last three games, the redshirt senior is averaging 14.7 points and six boards per game. 
  • Tejada moved up to 25th on Towson's all-time scoring with 1,089 points passing Mel Land and Brian Fobbs. Dylan Williamson is 24th with 1,100 career points. 
  • Towson conceded its fewest points in a first half all season with 17 in this game. The season best for points allowed is 15 against Norfolk State in the second half.
UP NEXT
The Tigers (10-9, 2-4 CAA) remain home for a game against Drexel on Monday afternoon. The Dragons (9-10, 3-3 CAA) are led by Shane Blakeney, who is averaging a team high 12.9 points per game.
