Towson Defeats Charleston in Defensive Battle

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's basketball handed Charleston its first conference loss of the season with a 61-52 win on Thursday night.

KEY STATS
  • Tyler Coleman and Tyler Tejada led the team with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
  • Five players pulled down at least five rebounds with Jack Doumbia Jr. leading the way with seven boards.
  • Mor Seck blocked three shots for a new Towson high and his third multi-block games with the Tigers and his 16th career multi-block game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson scored the first four points of the game and never trailed for the entire game.
  • The Tigers went on a 13-3 run to start the game, holding Charleston to one field goal for the first eight minutes and 39 seconds.
  • From there, the game was played close with a Jaquan Womack buzzer beater punctuating a late flurry for the tigers to enter the locker room up 17, doubling the Cougars 34-17.
  • Charleston came out of the locker room fighting and brought the score to a four point Towson lead, 46-42.
  • Towson bounced back with two straight buckets in the paint by Chike Ndefo, eventually extending their lead to nine.
  • The game was eventually iced by two Dylan Williamson free throws and two Coleman free throws to give Towson the 61-52 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Tejada moved up to 25th all-time on the all-time Towson scoring with 1,089 points passing Mel Land and Brian Fobbs.
  • This is the first game Towson has won this season when two or fewer players score 10 or less.
  • Towson conceded its fewest points in a first half all season with 17 in this game. The season best for points allowed is 15 against Norfolk State in the second half.
 
UP NEXT
The Tigers remain home for a game against the closest CAA team in Drexel. The Dragons are 2-3 in CAA play so far this season with both wins coming at home. Drexel has one player averaging double figures in conference play in Shane Blakeney (12.9) Eli Beard (11.5). Victor Panov is the team's leading rebounder in conference play with 6.7 per game while adding 8.8 points per game. The Dragons have started the same five players though their first six  games with Blakeney, Eli Beard, Panov, Kevon Vanderhost and Martin de Lapoterie getting every conference start for Drexel.
