FREDERICKSBURG, Va.- The Towson University women's tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 6-1 victory over Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers, who beat Rider last fall, dropped a 4-3 decision to Johns Hopkins on Sunday night.  

Towson earned the doubles point – sweeping all three matches At No. 3, Towson's team of Gaia Montecchi and Ashira Murray won its match, 6-1. Towson's top team of Kiersten Tambe and Chandrè Boshoff clinched the point with a 6-3 win.
 
Straight set victories in singles by Montecchi (No. 2), Murray (No. 5) and Aubrey Carper (No. 6) gave the visitors a 4-0 advantage.
 
The other three singles matches went to three sets. Tambe earned a victory on court 1 winning the super breaker by a score of 10-7. At No. 3, Boshoff battled back from a set down to dominate the second set and take the super breaker.

"The girls did an excellent job of persevering through adversity," Towson head coach Jamie Peterson said. "We got off to a good start by sweeping the doubles and when things got tight in singles, we played clutch tennis. I was especially proud of how they bounced back at a tough loss to Hopkins a couple days ago."

Towson will host Fairfield on Friday night at the Coppermine Bare Hills indoor facility. The Stags are 0-4 this season after losses to UConn, St. John's, Rhode Island and Army West Point.
