NORFOLK, Va. – The Towson University baseball team concluded its season-opening series vs. Norfolk State with a doubleheader on Saturday at Marty L. Miller field.
Towson's (2-1) offense came alive in Saturday's doubleheader as they topped Norfolk State (1-2) 12-3 in game one. The Tigers more than doubled that offensive output in game two, setting the single inning run record with 15 runs in the fifth inning against the Spartans. They went on to win game two 28-4 in seven innings.
Key Stats (Game One):
- Towson reliever Ryder Jeske (1-0) earned the win, allowing two earned runs on three hits in 2.0 innings pitched. Jeske struck out two. Towson starter Liam Diehl tossed five shutout innings, adding six strikeouts in the no decision.
- Norfolk State reliever Myles Crocker (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, while retiring one batter.
- The Tigers out-hit the Spartans 15-7 in the game.
How it Happened (Game One):
- In the top of the second, Keldrin Rodriguez hit a two-out double in the second and was knocked home by Frank Adamski Jr. on an RBI single.
- The next eight frames of the game were scoreless before Norfolk State's Journette hit a two-out, solo home run to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth.
- In the next frame, Nich Francuzenko came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. He singled, knocking in two runs. The third baserunner scored on a throwing error by the second baseman.
- The Spartans' Mazell doubled with a runner on third in the home half, cutting their deficit to 4-2.
- The Tigers extended their lead to eight in the eighth inning as Nick LoBello, Nich Francuzenko and Max D'Alessandro each recorded two RBIs in the frame. D'Alessandro's homer was the Tigers' first of the season.
- Josh Janove and Adamski Jr. knocked in two more runs in the ninth.
- Joey Tuttoilmondo surrendered one run in the home half as the Black & Gold won 12-3 in game one.
Key Stats (Game Two):
- Towson starter Dutch DeProspero (1-0) earned the win after allowing two earned runs on four hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
- Norfolk State starter Mac Yarbrough (0-1) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on two hits and four walks in 1.0 inning pitched.
- The Tigers out-hit the Spartans 17-5.
How it Happened (Game Two):
- After two walks to begin the game, Brian Heckelman knocked in a run to give the Tigers the lead. Nigel Sebastianelli followed with an RBI single, pushing the lead to two. Four batters later, Heckelman scored on a balk, putting the Tigers up by three.
- With a runner on third in the bottom half, Norfolk State's Ealey knocked the run home on an RBI groundout to second base.
- Frank Adamski Jr. walked with the bases loaded and one out in the second, extending the lead to three once again. Keldrin Rodriguez followed that with a sacrifice fly to make it a four-run game.
- After a bunt single in the home half, Jones hit an RBI double, pulling Norfolk state within three at 5-2.
- The Tigers added eight more runs over the next two offensive frames, three in the third and five in the fourth. Highlighting the innings was Rodriguez's two-run single in the fourth.
- Towson added 15 runs on seven hits and two errors in the fifth, marking a new single-inning record in team history, and pushing the lead to 28-2.
- The Spartans scored two in the bottom half to double their run total.
- The sixth and seventh innings were scoreless as the Tigers went on to win 28-4 by way of the run rule.
Inside the Numbers
- Towson's 15-run fifth inning is the most runs scored in a single inning in program history. The previous record was 14 runs in the first inning against Richmond on April 5, 2005.
- The Tigers' 28 runs in game two are the most in a game since setting the single game record of 30 runs against Richmond in that same game.
- The series win marks Towson's first season-opening series win since taking three of four from CSUN in 2017.

Towson will head to Las Cruces, N.M. to face New Mexico State in a three-game series starting Friday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).
