Towson Softball Splits Two Games on the Final Day of the Purple & White Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Towson University softball team played its final two games of the Purple and White Classic on Saturday. A pair of close games saw the Tigers suffer an 11-10 loss to Bowling Green before rebounding to defeat Lipscomb 5-3 to salvage a 1-3 weekend at Furman.
 
Game 1: Towson 10, Bowling Green 11
Key Stats:
  • Addie Ferguson had two hits, a homerun and four RBIs
  • Grace Franczyk recorded a pair of hits, a homerun and three RBIs
  • Taylor Broadbent and Mackenzie Gorczyca each had multi-hit games
  • Amanda Medina receives the loss allowing eight hits and ten runs (five earned) with seven strikeouts
  • Avari Sandifer earns the win after pitching 0.2 of an inning in relief, Mackenzie Krafcik earns the save.
How it Happened:
  • The first batter of the game for Bowling Green singled, stole second and scored from another single to give the first run of the game to the Falcons.
  • The score held at 1-0 until the bottom of the 2nd, Taylor Broadbent and Mackenzie Gorczyca led off the inning with a pair of singles before Addie Ferguson hit a homerun to turn Towson's one-run deficit into a two-run lead.
  • Later in the inning Hannah Lebert walked and later scored from a throwing error. Kinsley Peek walked to put a pair of runners on for Grace Franczyk who hit the second three-run homer of the inning to cap off a seven-run frame for the Tigers.
  • A pair of errors saw Bowling Green get a run back in the top of the 3rd, the next batter hit a two-run single and another RBI single later in the inning saw the Falcons cut the Tigers lead to 7-5 in the 3rd.
  • Three straight one-out walks loaded the bases for the Falcons in the 4th and a fourth walk and a two run single gave Bowling Green an 8-7 lead.
  • The Tigers loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the frame. A wild pitch allowed Hannah Lebert to score the tying run, but the Tigers were unable to retake the lead in the inning.
  • A single and error put two Bowling Green runners on with two outs. A single gave the go-ahead run to the Falcons and a bases loaded hit batter made it 10-8 entering the bottom of the 5th.
  • The Falcons put two runners on via an error and a walk with two outs in the top of the 6th. Then an RBI single increased Bowling Green's lead to three.
  • Franczyk, Broadbent and Gorczyca all singled to load the bases in the bottom of the 6th. Addie Ferguson made it four straight singles and Alyssa Myint hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to one entering the 7th inning. But the Tigers couldn't rally further and fell 11-10 to the Falcons.
 
Game 2: Towson 5, Lipscomb 3
Key Stats:
  • Amanda Ashe hit a pinch-hit two-run single.
  • Kaci Benton had two hits including a double.
  • Grace Franczyk had a hit and an RBI.
  • Olivia Trombley earned the complete game win pitching 7.0 innings allowing six hits and three runs with four strikeouts.
  • Macey Ogle received the loss after pitching 2.0 innings of relief and allowing two hits and three runs (two earned).
 
How it Happened
  • Leah Mears was the only player for either team to record a hit in the first 3.0 innings as Olivia Trombley retired her first nine batters in order.
  • A single and a walk gave Lipscomb its first two baserunners of the game, the next batter hit a double to score both runners and give Lipscomb a 2-0 lead.
  • Kaci Benton led off the bottom of the 4th with a double and Grace Franczyk singled to cut the deficit in half. Later in the inning Alyssa Myint reached on an error allowing Franczyk to score the tying run.
  • Taylor Broadbent singled with one out in the home half of the fifth, advanced on a wild pitch then scored the go-ahead run from a Kaci Benton single making it 3-2.
  • Trombley got the first two outs of the top of the 6th, but the third batter Elizabeth Martin hit a solo homerun to tie the game at three.
  • Trombley and Alyssa Myint walked to put two on with one out in the bottom of the 6th. Amanda Ashe was brought on to pinch hit with two outs and delivered a two-run single to give Towson a 5-3 lead entering the 7th inning.
  • Trombley closed out the game in the 7th to cap off a 5-3 Towson win.
