Towson Women’s Lacrosse’s Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short Against No. 17/22 Denver

DENVER, Colo. - The Towson University women's lacrosse team traveled west for a Thursday matchup against No. 17/22 Denver. Despite a late five-goal surge in the fourth quarter, the Tigers (1-3, 0-0 CAA) fell 15-11 to the Pioneers (3-0, 0-0 BIG EAST).

How it Happened vs. Denver
  • Caroline Keli opened the scoring for Denver, but Elise Smigiel answered on the other end to even the game at 1-1. 
  • The Pioneers responded with back-to-back goals to take a two-goal lead before Smigiel notched her second of the day to trim the deficit to one. Denver closed the first quarter on a 2-0 run to carry a 5-2 advantage into the second. 
  • The Pioneers added five more goals in the second quarter to stretch their lead to eight. Hannah Lewis added tallied another goal for the Tigers off a free position goal. Gabby Bjugan netted her second goal of the season late in the frame, sending Towson into halftime trailing 10-4. 
  • Eva Thomsen-Marr opened the second half with a goal for Denver. Valerie Thompson answered for Towson to make it 11-5, but a free-position goal by the Pioneers kept the margin at seven. 
  • Katie Roszko recorded her first goal of the contest midway through the third quarter to cut the score to 12-6. Denver added another before the end of the period and maintained a 13-6 lead heading into the fourth. 
  • The Pioneers struck twice early in the final quarter to extend their advantage. Ocea Leavy later weaved through traffic and found Roszko for her second goal of the day, bringing Towson within seven. 
  • The Tigers mounted a late push, scoring five consecutive goals - including Roszko's third to complete her hat trick - but the comeback effort fell short as Denver secured the 15-11 victory.
