LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Towson University baseball team faced New Mexico State on Sunday afternoon at Presley Askew Field in the final game of a three-game series.
Towson (4-2) built a 5-2 lead after three vs. New Mexico State (1-5) before the Aggies tied the game at five in the fifth. The Tigers reclaimed a three-run lead in the seventh before Jacob White earned his first save of the season, closing out the game with one additional run surrendered.
Key Stats:
- Towson reliever Austin Perando (1-0) earned the win, tossing 2.1 scoreless frames while surrendering two hits. Perando struck out three batters. Jacob Whiteman (1) earned the save, allowing one earned run on two hits in 2.0 innings tossed. Whiteman struck out one.
- New Mexico State pitcher Jack Turner (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks in five innings pitched. Turner struck out nine.
How it Happened:
- With two on and one out in the bottom of the first, New Mexico State's Campbell reached on a fielder's choice. A throwing error allowed one run to score on the play.
- Brady Nathison hit a single up the middle with two runners in scoring position in the second, giving the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
- Daniels' leadoff home run in the home half tied the game.
- Max D'Alessandro and Brian Heckelman hit back-to-back home runs to start the fourth inning. Nathison picked up his third RBI of the game later in the inning, putting the Tigers up by three.
- The Aggies tied the game with three runs on two hits in the fifth. Perando left three runners stranded after retiring the final out of the frame.
- Towson reclaimed the lead with three runs on four hits in the seventh, putting TU up 8-5.
- The Aggies scored one in the ninth before Whiteman retired the final two batters, earning his first save of the season.
Inside the Numbers:
- Nathison finished the day 3-3 with four RBIs, both season highs six games in.
- D'Alessandro and Heckelman each hit their second home runs of 2026. D'Alessandro posted his third multi-hit game this season while Heckelman posted his first three-hit game of the year.
