Baseball’s Comeback Thwarted by Northeastern in Series Finale

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Towson University baseball team faced Northeastern on Sunday afternoon at Friedman Diamond in the final game of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series.

Northeastern (9-7, 5-1 CAA) went up 2-0 after the second inning. Towson (6-10, 0-6 CAA) scored one in the fifth to halve the deficit. Brinker's leadoff homer in the bottom half pushed the Huskies' lead back to two. Josh Janove scored on an error in the seventh, getting the Tigers back within a run. The Black & Gold stranded one runner on base over the final two innings, giving Northeastern a 3-2 win.

Key Stats:
  • Towson starter Dutch DeProspero (1-2) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings pitched. DeProspero struck out six batters.
  • Northeastern starter Ryan Griffin earned the win after surrendering two runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks in 6.2 frames of work. Griffin struck out three. Andrew Rogovic (2) earned the save, tossing 1.0 scoreless frame with one hit allowed.

How it Happened:
  • With two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the second, Chris Walsh's single through the left side plated both, putting Northeaster up early.
  • Colin Cusick's single up the middle in the fifth put a Tiger runner on. Yariel Rodriguez's sacrifice bunt moved Cusick to second before he got to third on a wild pitch. Nick LoBello hit an RBI groundout to third base to get Towson on the board.
  • Matt Brinker led off the home half with a home run, extending the Husky lead back to two.
  • After walking to lead off the top of the seventh inning, Josh Janove got to third on throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Brady Nathison reached safely on a ground ball to third base, allowing Janove to score and get the Tigers within a run.
  • Towson stranded one runner on base over the final two frames, giving Northeastern a 3-1 win in the series finale.
