TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team hosted Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) on Wednesday afternoon in a midweek contest.
UMES (2-15) hit a leadoff home run in the third inning to take the lead. Towson (7-10) claimed it in the home half, scoring six runs on three hits. The Hawks cut the deficit to three in the fifth before the Tigers pushed it back to five at 8-3 in the sixth. Three Towson pitchers held UMES scoreless over the final three frames as they went on to win at Schuerholz Park.
Key Stats:
- Towson reliever Vincent Salvo (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 1.1 scoreless frames with two hits and walks allowed. Salvo struck out one.
- UMES starter Elijah Benton (0-1) took the loss after allowing six earned runs on three hits and four walks in 2.2 frames. Benton struck out two.
How it Happened:
- Julian Jimenez hit a leadoff home run in the top of the third inning, giving the Hawks the early edge.
- The Tigers added six runs on three hits in the home half to take the lead. Frank Adamski Jr. was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game. Josh Janove followed with a two-run single to left to put the Black & Gold ahead. After Coy Allman's sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Ethan Brand's sacrifice fly scored Adamski Jr. Cole Stefano was hit by a pitch, putting runners on the corners. A successful double steal allowed Janove to come home. Ben Nugent drove in the final run of the frame with a single to left field, putting the Tigers up 6-1.
- With two runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth, the Hawks' Taylor singled to center, plating both base runners.
- Nich Francuzenko and Adamski Jr. led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and double, respectively, allowing both to move into scoring position. Janove hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Francuzenko. Ethan Brand beat the throw at first on a double play attempt, scoring Adamski Jr. on the play.
- Towson pitchers stranded two Hawk base runners over the final three frames, going on to win 8-3.
Inside the Numbers:
- Janove posted his second mutli-hit and first three-RBI game this season. He finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBIs, one run scored and a walk.
- Salvo recorded his first win of the season after tossing 1.1 scoreless frames in relief.
