CHARLESTON, S.C. – After losing the opening set 6-0,
Ashira Murray rallied to win in three sets to improve to 10-3 on the season. However, the Towson University women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to the College of Charleston Tuesday afternoon.
The Tigers are now 6-7, including 0-3 in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA).
The match started out well for Towson with
Kiersten Tambe and
Chandré Boshoff upsetting Francesca Salvato and Sia Cariov 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The Charleston duo earned First Team All-CAA honors a year ago and were 7-1 this season. The Cougars won the other two matches to secure the doubles point.
Charleston (6-5, 1-1 CAA) won four singles matches in straight sets to clinch the match – winning on courts 6, 4, 2 and 1. After dropping the first set 6-1, Tambe battled back from down 5-1 in the second set to force a tiebreaker at No. 1.
On court 5, Murray dropped the opening set to Marra Bruce 6-0 before roaring back to win the final two sets 6-3, 6-2. The junior is now 5-0 at the No. 5 spot in the lineup. She is 5-3 at No. 4.
Boshoff, who had not played singles since injuring her ankle versus Swarthmore on Feb. 14, won the opening set 6-3 and led 5-2 in the second but could not close out the match. She led the super breaker 5-3 before Salvato won the match.
"The score doesn't indicate the competitiveness of the match," Towson head coach
Jamie Peterson said. "Kiersten and Chandre gave us lift with a great doubles match and we had opportunities in singles but couldn't close out the ones we had. Chandre brought great energy in her return to the singles lineup and Ashira did a great job of turning her match around."
