Softball Drops Series Opener at Monmouth

TOWSON, Md.  – The Towson University softball team played the first of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series against Monmouth on Friday. A 7th inning rally wasn't enough as the Tigers lost game one of the weekend to the Hawks 7-4.
 
Key Stats:
  • Mackenzie Gorczyca had her second three-hit game in a row and had two RBIs.
  • Isabella Canesi hit her fourth homerun of the year.
  • Kaci Benton and Alyssa Myint each had multiple hits.
  • Olivia Trombley receives the loss for Towson after starting on the mound and throwing 5.2 innings allowing 13 hits and seven runs.
  • Alissa Eimont earns the win after pitching a 7.0 inning complete game and allowing 12 hits and four runs.
How it Happened:
  • The Hawks struck first as three singles and a walk in the bottom of the 1st brought home a pair of runs to put Monmouth up 2-0 early.
  • After a scoreless 2nd, two Tigers reached base with two outs in the top of the 3rd for Mackenzie Gorczyca who singled to cut the deficit in half.
  • Monmouth responded with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 lead.
  • A scoreless 4th inning brought up Towson in the top of the 5th which Kaci Benton and Addie Ferguson led off with a pair of singles. Gorczyca then recorded her second RBI hit of the game to make it a 4-2 game.
  • A pair of singles followed by back-to-back doubles broke open the game for Monmouth as the Hawks took a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the 6th.
  • Grace Franczyk led off the top of the 7th with a single and with two outs, Isabella Canesi hit her fourth homerun of the season to bring the Tigers within three. But Monmouth closed out the game from there to beat the Tigers 7-4.

Game two of the weekend series between the Tigers and Hawks will take place tomorrow Saturday, March 21 at noon.
