TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team played the rubber match of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series against Monmouth on Sunday. A pitcher's duel saw this game go well into extra innings before the Tigers broke it open in the 10th to secure a 4-2 win and it's second conference series win.
Key Stats:
How it Happened:
- Leah Mears, Kaci Benton and Addie Ferguson all reached base in the top of the 1st to load the bases with no outs, but Hawks starter Alissa Eimont retired the next three batters to escape the inning unscathed.
- Olivia Trombley allowed only one hit over her first two innings of work.
- Eimont allowed only one Tiger base-runner between the 2nd and 6th innings.
- Trombley and the Tiger defense worked around traffic on the base paths in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings to keep the game scoreless.
- The game entered the 7th still deadlocked at 0-0.
- Mackenzie Gorczyca doubled to lead off the 7th and Isabella Canesi hit an RBI single to finally open the scoring and give Towson a 1-0 lead.
- The hawks responded by loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning. A force-out at home got the second out but a wild pitch allowed Monmouth to tie the game. A diving catch in foul territory by Canesi sent the game to extras.
- Both Trombley and Eimont remained in the game to begin the extra innings, and a Hawks single was the only baserunner of the 8th inning.
- The Tigers went down in order in the 9th before Trombley worked around two more Monmouth singles to send the game to the 10th.
- A pinch-hitting Briyana Wright doubled to lead off the 10th, and with one out Addison Miller singled to give Towson a 2-1 lead. Now with two outs Benton hit an RBI knock to make it 3-1, then the next batter Addie Ferguson singled her home to put Towson up 4-1 entering the bottom of the 10th.
- Mikaela Guy entered to close the game out, but a single and double put two in scoring position with no outs. The next batter hit a grounder to short that allowed the Tigers to trade one run for two outs. Guy saw the game out from there as Towson earned a 4-2 ten-inning victory to take the series 2-1.
