Stony Brook Takes Series Opener vs. Towson Baseball

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Towson University baseball team faced Stony Brook on Friday afternoon in the first of three games against the Seawolves at Joe Nathan Field.
 
Towson (8-14, 0-10 CAA) took a one-run lead after the first inning and surrendered it to Stony Brook (6-16, 4-6 CAA) in the third. The Seawolves added an insurance run in the seventh inning, and held the Tigers scoreless over their final two offensive frames, to win 3-1 in the series opener.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson starter Dutch DeProspero (1-3) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks in 4.0 innings pitched. DeProspero struck out two batters.
  • Stony Brook starter Micah Worley (3-3) earned the win after allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks in 6.0 innings of work. Worley struck out eight Tiger batters.
 
How it Happened:
  • Nick LoBello started the game with a leadoff triple down the right-field line. Brian Heckelman followed with an RBI groundout to short, giving the Tigers a one-run edge.
  • Back-to-back singles from Carson and Zampieron put runners on the corners in the bottom of the third inning. Villani hit a double down the right-field line to follow, plating both runners to give the Seawolves a 2-1 lead.
  • The Seawolves added an insurance run in the seventh inning. Gell doubled down the right-field line and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Carson hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score the run.
  • Towson stranded one runner over the final two frames to drop the series opener, 3-1.

The Tigers and Seawolves continue their series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Joe Nathan Field.
