TOWSON, Md.- The Towson University women's tennis team defeated Delaware State 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Tiger Tennis Complex in a match that took nearly four hours.
The Tigers (5-5) played without junior
Chandrè Boshoff, who plays No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles, and senior
Sania Suchinsky, who is 11-4 lifetime on court 6.
The home team earned the doubles points after
Gaia Montecchi and
Ashira Murray rallied from a 4-2 deficit to win 7-5 on court 2. Montecchi gave Towson a 2-0 advantage with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. The sophomore improved to 8-2 this season.
After Del State (1-4) won on courts 4 and 5 to tie the match,
Aubrey Carper (No. 6) gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead with a straight set win. Carper also won her doubles match.
The final two singles matches went to third sets. The Hornets tied the match at 3-all with a win at No. 3 setting the stage for the deciding point on court 1 – winning 12 of the final 17 games of the match.
Kiersten Tambe clinched the match – beating Catherine Goldman at No. 1. The sophomore lost the opening set before winning the final two sets.
