Monmouth Tops Towson Baseball in Series Finale at Schuerholz Park

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team hosted Monmouth in the final game of a three-game, Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series on Sunday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park.
 
Monmouth (5-7, 3-0 CAA) jumped out to a four-run lead in the first and added five more in the third. Towson (5-7, 0-3 CAA) got on the board in the home half, posting three runs in the frame. Following three subsequent scoreless innings, the Hawks added one each in their final three offensive frames. Josh Janove plated another Towson run in the eighth, but the Tigers went down in order in the ninth to fall 12-4 in the series finale.
 
Key Stats:
  • Towson starter Dutch DeProspero (1-1) took the loss after allowing eight runs, seven earned, on six hits in 2.0 innings pitched. DeProspero struck out one and walked two.
  • Monmouth pitcher Brendan Kenneally (1-0) earned the win, allowing two earned runs on four hits in 4.0 innings of relief work. Kenneally struck out two and walked one.
 
How it Happened:
  • Three of Monmouth's first four batters of the game reached base, bringing Chris Walsh to the plate with the bases loaded. Walsh hit a line drive right up the middle, plating the first run of the game. Buecker followed with a two-run single to left field. Bretschneider grounded out on the following at-bat, allowing a fourth run to come home for the Hawks.
  • After three-straight singles to start the third inning, Buecker was hit by a pitch to extend the Monmouth lead. Following a pitching change, Bretschneider cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field to put the Hawks up by nine.
  • With two runners on in the next frame, Brian Heckelman doubled to right center to plate the Tigers' first run of the game. Two batters later, Max D'Alessandro's RBI groundout added a run. Frank Adamski Jr. followed with a single to right to make it a 9-3 game.
  • A passed ball with the bases loaded in the seventh gave Monmouth its tenth run of the day.
  • Mustaro's double down the left field line in the eighth extended the Hawks' lead to eight runs.
  • Josh Janove doubled down the left field line in the home half, scoring Adamski Jr. from third.
  • Nick Lovarco hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 12-4 game.
  • The Tigers went down in order in the final frame, giving the Hawks a sweep in the first league series of the season.

The Tigers will face George Washington on Wednesday, March 11, at 2:30 p.m. at Tucker Field in Arlington, Va.
