Towson Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Drexel on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. - The Towson University women's lacrosse team hosted Drexel on Saturday for a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Senior Day matchup. The Tigers (5-8, 3-2 CAA) defeated the Dragons (4-9, 1-4 CAA) 14-12.

Luca DeMaio tallied four goals for the Tigers, followed by Gabby Bjugan with a hat trick. Valerie Thompson and Elise Smigiel each notched two, and Hailey Waldron, Katie Roszko and Hannah Lewis each tallied one.

  • Jenna Cardeno recored 11 saves on the day, compared to only six from Drexel. 
  • Drexel took the edge in shots, 27-26.

How it Happened vs. Drexel
  • The Dragons struck first, scoring within the opening minute, but Luca DeMaio answered quickly to even the score with her first goal of the game. 
  • Both teams traded goals in rapid succession, with scores coming less than a minute apart. 
  • Towson added two more to extend its lead to four. Drexel responded with another goal to try to cut the deficit, but Valerie Thompson found the back of the net with 0:33 remaining in the quarter, helping Towson maintain its advantage heading into the second period. 
  • The Tigers opened the third quarter with a 3–0 run to push their lead to five. Drexel answered with a free-position goal and added another less than a minute later. 
  • Gabby Bjugan capitalized on a woman-up opportunity for Towson, and Hannah Lewis followed with a free-position goal to give the Tigers a five-goal cushion heading into the break. 
  • Drexel came out strong in the third quarter, using a 5–0 run to tie the game at 10–10. 
  • Thompson responded with her second goal to put Towson back in front, and DeMaio added another to extend the lead to two entering the final quarter. 
  • Each team scored twice in the fourth quarter. Cardeno made four key saves in the final six minutes to preserve Towson's lead and secure a 14–12 victory for the Tigers.
