Rookies Power Softball to a Game Three Win Over UNCW

TOWSON, Md.  – The Towson University softball team faced UNCW in the final of a three game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series Sunday afternoon. A 5th inning homerun by Leah Mears proved to be enough as Mikaela Guy's complete game sealed a 2-1 Towson win to end the weekend.

Key Stats:
  • Leah Mears hit her second homer of the season and had two RBIs.
  • Addison Miller and Alyssa Myint both recorded hits as well.
  • Mikaela Guy earned her fourth win of the season after pitching a complete game and allowing three hits and one run with three strikeouts over 7.0 innings of work.
  • Taylor Barlow receives the loss for the Seahawks after allowing three hits and two runs with three strikeouts over 5.0 innings.

How it Happened:
  • Alyssa Myint led off the game with a single, but the Tiger's couldn't capitalize and take an early lead.
  • Mikaela Guy sent the Seahawks down in order in the 1st.
  • UNCW opened the scoring in the 2nd and led 1-0 two innings in.
  • Diving stops from Myint in the bottom of the 3rd and from Mackenzie Gorczyca in the bottom of the 4th helped Guy keep the Tiger's deficit at one.
  • A streak of eight consecutive Tiger's being retired was broken by an Addison Miller single in the top of the 5th, the next batter Leah Mears went the opposite way for a two-run homerun to flip the one run lead in Towson's favor.
  • Guy worked around a baserunner in the 5th inning to hold onto the slim lead.
  • With a runner on in the bottom of the 6th and two outs, a fly ball to the warning track was hauled in by a leaping Kaci Benton to keep the Tigers in front entering the 7th.
  • After the Tiger's went down in order in the top of the 7th, a one-out error didn't phase Guy as she sealed the Tiger's 2-1 win with her third strikeout of the game and her tenth of the weekend.
Up Next:
The Tiger's now return home to begin a five-game homestand which will begin with Towson hosting Villanova on Wednesday, April 15 at 3 p.m. for a midweek non-conference clash.
