Softball Takes Down Villanova in Midweek Action

TOWSON, Md.  – The Towson University softball team faced Villanova in a non-conference midweek game on Wednesday. The Tigers scored five unanswered runs to defeat the Wildcats 5-2 at Tiger Softball Stadium.
 
Key Stats:
  • Hannah Lebert hit a two-run double.
  • Eight of the nine in Towson's starting lineup recorded hits.
  • Leah Mears had an RBI for the second straight game.
  • Kallissa Coats made her first career start and hit her first career hit and earned her first career RBI.
  • Jessa Pieters started on the mound for the Tigers and earned the win after allowing five hits and two runs over 3.0 innings.
  • Amanda Medina earned a twelve-out save after allowing only one hit with two strikeouts over 4.0 scoreless innings out if the bullpen.
  • Lexi Kobryn receives the loss for Villanova after allowing five hits and three earned runs over 3.0 innings.
 
How it Happened:
  • The Wildcats jumped out two an early lead as a two-run double put Villanova ahead 2-0 after the 1st.
  • Towson starter Jessa Pieters bounced back with a scoreless top of the 2nd.
  • Isabella Canesi and Taylor Broadbent led off the bottom of the 2nd with singles and Addie Ferguson walked to load the bases with no outs. Leah Mears singled to bring in one before Hannah Lebert doubled to bring home a pair making it 3-2 Towson.
  • After another scoreless inning from Pieters, Kaci Benton led off the home half of the 3rd with a triple before a Wildcat error made it a little league homerun giving the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
  • Amanda Medina entered the game from the bullpen in the 4th and retired the first eight batters she faced.
  • Ferguson's lead-off double in the 4th failed to lead to any insurance runs for the Tigers.
  • Medina allowed the first hit of her appearance in the 6th but rebounded with a strikeout to end the inning.
  • A Broadbent walk and Ferguson single put two on with no outs in the bottom of the 6th. Broadbent was thrown out stealing but pinch-runner Lexi Best-Arnold was brought home by a Kallissa Coats single to make it 5-2 Towson.
  • Medina threw her fourth scoreless inning in a row to seal a 5-2 Towson win.
 
Up Next:
The Tigers remain home this weekend as Towson welcomes Monmouth for a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series. Game one on Friday is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
