Late Rally Falls Short for Softball Against Monmouth

TOWSON, Md.  – The Towson University softball team faced Monmouth in the first of a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series on Friday. A late rally was unable to overcome an early deficit as the Tigers lost 5-3 to the Hawks.
 
Key Stats:
  • Kaci Benton hat 2-4 with her 9th double of the season.
  • Kallissa Coats hit 2-2 off the bench and had an RBI.
  • Alyssa Myint hit a two-run triple.
  • Isabella Canesi had multiple hits and a walk.
  • Kinsley Peek recorded a hit and a walk.
  • Mikaela Guy receives the loss for Towson after allowing five hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts over 5.0 innings of work.
  • Amanda Medina and Chelsey Farthing each pitched an inning out of the bullpen.
  • Alissa Eimont earned the win after pitching a 7.0 inning complete game and allowing ten hits and two earned runs.
How it Happened:
  • An error allowed the first batter of the game for Monmouth to reach safely. A two-out double scored the runner to give the Hawks an early 1-0 lead.
  • Singles from Isabella Canesi and Kinsley Peek allowed the Tigers to load the bases, but Towson was unable to tie the game in the inning.
  • After a scoreless 3rd inning, the Hawks used an RBI triple to plate two runs and take a 3-0 lead in the top of the 4th.
  • Monmouth again extended its lead in the 5th as another sacrifice fly made it a 4-0 deficit.
  • Towson loaded the bases for a second time in the bottom of the 5th thanks to hits from Kaci Benton and Mackenzie Gorczyca, but once again all three runners were stranded.
  • Three more Monmouth singles in the top of the 6th brought home a fifth run for the hawks.
  • Kallissa Coats and Leah Mears each singled to lead off the bottom of the 6th, after Hannah Lebert moved the runners over Alyssa Myint tripled to score both am=nd make it a 5-2 game entering the 7th.
  • Chelsey Farthing pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the top of the 7th highlighted by Kaci Benton throwing out a Hawk at home plate to end the inning.
  • Canesi reached on an infield single in the bottom of the 7th and made her way to third with two outs. Another Coats single made it 5-3 but Towson couldn't get any closer and lost game one of the series to Monmouth.
 
Up Next:
Game two of this series between the Tigers and Hawks will be played tomorrow, April 18. The game is currently scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time.
