MACON, Ga. – The Towson University baseball team faced Mercer on Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three-game series.
After Mercer (28-12) jumped out to an early lead, Towson (15-22) tied the game at three, then twice later in the game. Tied 6-6, the Bears hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning to go back ahead by two. The Tigers were held scoreless in the final inning, falling 8-6 in the final game against the Bears.
Key Stats:
- Towson pitcher Jacob Whiteman (1-2) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on two hits in 2.1 relief innings. Whiteman struck out four and walked two batters.
- Mercer pitcher Collin Ewaldsen (2-1) earned the win after allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
How it Happened:
- Eli Stephens put Mercer on the board with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning.
- Nick LoBello drove in Towson's first run of the game on a bases-loaded fielder's choice in the fourth inning. Keldrin Rodriguez scored on Janove's subsequent reach on error to cut the Tigers' deficit to one run.
- Ethan Brand scored from first base on Nich Francuzenko's reach on error in the top of the fifth, tying the game for the Tigers.
- The Bears reclaimed a one-run lead in the bottom half on Huffman's bases-loaded walk.
- K. Rodriguez led off the sixth inning with a double to right field. After moving to third on LoBello's sacrifice bunt, he scored on AJ Kolb's single through the left side to tie the game.
- Katz's homer and Baughcum's RBI single through the left side put the Bears back up by two.
- Brian Heckelman tied the game at six with a two-run homer to left field.
- Back-to-back homers from Kamaka and Baughcum gave Mercer an 8-6 lead with one inning to play.
- The Tigers were held scoreless in the top of the ninth inning and fell by that score in the final game of the series.
