High-Powered Offense Lifts Towson Women’s Lacrosse Over Elon, Clinches Spot in CAA Tournament

TOWSON, Md. - The Towson University women's lacrosse team welcomed Elon to Tiger Field for a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) matchup on Sunday. The Tigers (6-9, 4-2 CAA) defeated the Phoenix (7-8, 3-3 CAA) 16-7 to clinch the No. 3 spot in the CAA Tournament.

Hannah Lewis paced the Tigers with a career-high six points, tallying four goals and two assists. Elise Smigiel matched her career best with four goals, while Valerie Thompson and Katie Roszko each recorded hat tricks. Luca DeMaio and Tabi Reardon added a goal apiece.

Key Stats vs. Elon 

  • Towson outshot Elon, 46-21. 
  • The Tigers were 13-13 on clears, while Elon was 16-18. 
  • Towson won the draw control game, 18-7. 


How it Happened vs. Elon 

  • Valerie Thompson connected with Katie Roszko just over a minute into the game to put the Tigers on the board.  
  • Thompson then capitalized on an Elon turnover at the 12:54 mark of the first quarter, giving the Black & Gold a 200 lead. Elon responded with a 200 run to close out the opening quarter.  
  • Towson's offense took control early, going on a 6-0 run.  
  • Lillian Austin ended Elon's scoring drought with a free-position goal, cutting the deficit to five - the Phoenix's first goal since the 3:24 mark of the first quarter. 
  • Towson added three more goals late in the half to take an 11-3 lead into the break. The Black & Gold carried momentum into the second half, opening with two more goals to extend the lead to 10. Both teams traded goals before the end of the quarter, with Towson ahead 14-4. 
  • In the final quarter, the teams again exchanged early goals. Smigiel recorded her fourth goal of the game on a free-position attempt. Elon mounted a late 2-0 run, but it wasn't enough as Towson secured a dominant 16-7 victory. 


Inside the Numbers vs. Elon 

  • Senior Emma Baker surpassed 100 career draw controls with two more in today's game. 
  • With the win, Towson improved to 11–3 all-time against Elon, snapping a two-game losing streak in the series. 
 

Up Next
The Tigers are slated to travel to Philadelphia to face No. 25 Penn on Wednesday, April 22 for a 5:00 p.m. tilt. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
