HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Towson University baseball team faced Hofstra in the second game of a three-game Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series on Saturday afternoon at University Field.
Towson (18-26, 6-17 CAA) scored one run in the first and two in the fourth innings.
Aden Knowles held Hofstra (16-24, 10-13 CAA) hitless through the first five innings before giving up two runs on three hits in the sixth. Up 6-5 in the ninth,
Jacob Whiteman struck out the final batter of the game to earn his fifth save of the season.
Key Stats:
- Towson starter Aden Knowles (2-4) earned the win after allowing two earned runs on four hits in 6.2 innings pitched. Knowles struck out four and walked one batter. Jacob Whiteman earned his fifth save of the season after striking out the final batter of the game.
- Hofstra starter Chris Bedford (0-5) took the loss, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks in 2.0 innings of work.
How it Happened:
- Brady Nathison led off the game with a walk and moved to second on AJ Kolb's sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Keldrin Rodriguez hit an RBI double to left center, putting the Tigers up 1-0.
- With two runners on in the top of the fourth, Yariel Rodriguez hit a two-out, two-run double to right, putting the Black & Gold up by three.
- After five no-hit frames from Knowles, he surrendered two runs on three hits in the sixth, getting the Pride within a run at 3-2.
- Nick LoBello picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth, extending the lead to two.
- Nick Gallello singled through the left side with two runners on in the home half, scoring one for the Pride.
- In the top of the ninth, Frank Adamski Jr. singled to left field with two runners on base, scoring one. Nich Francuzenko was hit on the following at-bat to load the bases. Josh Janove walked, putting the Tigers up 6-3.
- Michael Brown hit a two-out single through the left side of the infield with a runner on second, getting Hofstra within two runs. Later in the frame with runners on the corners, Whiteman came in to relieve Ryder Jeske. After surrendering an RBI single, Whiteman struck out the final batter, Gabriel Melara to earn his fifth save of the season.
Inside the Numbers:
- K. Rodriguez finished the day batting 2-for-4 with an RBI. He now has a team-leading 11 multi-hit games and extended his hitting streak to eight straight games.
- Knowles tossed 5.0 no-hit innings to start the game and turned in his longest outing of the season in the winning decision.
- Whiteman's five saves this season are the most by a Tiger pitcher since Brandon Gonnella had 10 in the 2014 season.
