Field Hockey Bounces Back with 1-0 Win over Maine

TOWSON, Md. - The Towson University field hockey team defeated Maine on Sunday to close out its three-game home stand at TU Field Hockey Complex. The Tiger's controlled possession for much of the game and broke through in the third quarter with Delfina Larripa's fourth goal of the year to improve to 4-6 on the season and drop the Black Bears to 4-5.

  • The Tigers attempted 17 shots putting 12 on goal and earned five penalty corners against one shot and one penalty corner from Maine.

Key Situations
  • 1st Quarter: Towson took control quickly to start the game and won a pair of penalty corners in the first five minutes with the second seeing Anouk Westerink's shot from the top of the circle saved. Westerink and Delfina Larripa both saw two shots saved in the quarter.
  • 2nd Quarter: The Tigers started the second quarter fast as well and in the first two minutes a ball from the left side found Larripa in the middle of the Bear's circle, but the graduate student saw her first and second attempts denied by the Maine goalie. The game would remain tied at zero entering the half.
  • 3rd Quarter: Towson maintained control entering the second half putting five shots on net in the first seven minutes of the third period. The fifth shot saw Olivia Thunnissen carry down the left side of the field and into the bottom corner of Maine's circle before finding Larripa who finally beat the Black Bear's keeper to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead entering the final quarter.
  • 4th Quarter: Early in the fourth the Tiger press forced a high turnover, and Skylar Santucci broke away towards the goal, but her shot was knocked away by the Maine goalie's eleventh save of the day. Maine swapped its goalie for an extra outfield player with three and a half minutes left, but Towson held on to secure the 1-0 win.
 
Behind the Numbers
  •  Delfina Larripa's goal gives her 11 on the season making her the first Tiger with double digit points and putting the graduate transfer in a tie for seventh in the CAA in points.
  • Towson now improves to 2-0 all time against Maine. The first victory being a 2-1 win in 2003.
  • The Tigers are now 4-2 at home this year.

  • The Tigers are back in action Friday, October 2 at 3 p.m. for the first CAA road game of the season where Towson will visit Willaim & Mary.
