TOWSON, Md. – The 2016-17 school year provided Towson Tiger fans with plenty of exciting moments on the court, on the field, the course and in the pool. Moment number four takes fans to the football field where the kicker became the hero.
Who can be trusted with the ball in their hands or on their foot with the game on the line. That's what coaches are always trying to figure out.
On November 19 at Rhode Island, freshman kicker
Aidan O'Neill proved his worth.
Trailing 31-29, the Tigers got the ball on their own nine-yard line with 52 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. After two incompletions,
Morgan Mahalak hit
Andre Dessenberg for 18 yards and a first down.
Two plays later,
Trey Kilgore made a leaping catch over the middle for 25 yards to midfield. The duo of Mahalak and Kilgore connected one more time, this one for a 15 yard gain down to the URI 33.
The Tigers were able to spike the ball with one second left setting the stage for what would have been a 50-yard field goal for the win. After URI called a timeout to try and ice the kicker, the Tigers were hit with a false start. Which resulted in a five yard penalty.
Not fazed by any of this, O'Neill stepped into the 55-yard kick and drilled it right down the middle with plenty of room to spare. That field goal sealed a 32-31 win for the Tigers.
