OWINGS MILLS, Md. ? The Towson field hockey team turned a 3-1 halftime lead into a 4-2 victory over Northeastern on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Tigers (8-5, 2-3 CAA) snapped a three game losing streak in the process.
“I thought today was a big win for us,” said Coach Michelle Webber. “We need to get back on the winning side in CAA play and we accomplished what we needed to today against a tough Northeastern team.”
Towson got on the board first in the contest as senior Maureen Meara crossed a ball from the far side to the near post and junior Mariah Schuette pushed it home for her seventh goal of the season. The Tigers held a 1-0 lead just 5:51 into the contest. The Tigers added to their lead in the 20th minute as freshman Katie DeFilippo knocked a ball past the Huskies keeper off a scramble in front of the net.
The Huskies (7-7, 1-3 CAA) made it a one goal game in the 25th minute as Jillian Wilkes scored off an assist from Anne Reike-Stuhlmann.
Towson made it a two-goal game again in the 33rd minute as junior Christina Boarman took a pass at the top of the circle and beat the defender and the keeper for her 13th goal of the season. This allowed the Tigers to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
Northeastern made it a 3-2 game in the 46th minute as Wilkes assisted on a goal by Kaela Barker.
The Tigers got an insurance goal in the 69th minute as Boarman tallied her second goal of the season, this time beating more than one defender before tucking it in the goal. The goal was Boarman's 14th of the season, tying her season-high in goals scored from last year. She is also now just two points shy of tying the school's single-season points record (38) which she set last year.
Sophomore Whitney Clugston made four saves to record her eighth victory of the season while Colleen Duffy made one save for the Huskies.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, October 15 against Georgetown. That game will be played at 6 p.m. in College Park, Md. on the University of Maryland's campus.
