HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. ? Hofstra freshman Genna Kovar scored 2:22 into the overtime session to lift the Pride to a 3-2 win over the Towson field hockey team on Friday afternoon. The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Tigers (11-7, 3-4 CAA) and moved them into a tie with Hofstra for one of the final playoff spots.
Hofstra got on the board first in the contest as Nancy Wagenbrenner scored 21:59 into the game. The assists on Wagenbrenner's goal went to Kristin Thompson and Brit Blankmeyer.
The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 just before the half on junior Mariah Schuette's 10th goal of the season. Junior Christina Boarman picked up her team leading 14th assist of the year on the goal.
The two teams went into the half tied at 1-1 and with Towson holding a 6-4 advantage in shots.
The Tigers would take a 2-1 advantage in the contest in the 57th minute. Senior Danielle Wacker scored her seventh goal of the season off a penalty corner. Wacker's goal was assisted by Boarman and junior Angie Brewer. Boarman's assist was her second of the game and 15th of the year, moving her within one assist of tying the school's single-season assist record.
Hofstra got the equalizer in the 65th minute as Thompson scored an unassisted goal.
In overtime, each team got one shot off but it was Kovar finding the back of the net to give the Pride the victory.
Sophomore Whitney Clugston made four saves in goal while Amanda Heyde made three saves for the Pride.
Hofstra finished the game with a 12-10 advantage in shots and a 7-6 advantage on penalty corners.
The Tigers close out the regular season on Sunday, November 2 with a 1 p.m. game at Drexel.
