PHILADELPHIA, Pa. ? Carolina Gibernau had two goals and two assists to help lead #15 Drexel to a 6-1 win over the Towson field hockey team in the regular season finale for both teams on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers (11-8, 3-5 CAA) have now dropped two straight contests.
The Tigers will advance to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament for the third time in the last four years, due to Delaware's loss to Hofstra. The Tigers first round opponent and game time will be determined on Monday morning.
Drexel jumped out to the early advantage with two goals in the first 14 minutes of the contest. Susan Ciufo scored the first goal at 11:05 off an assist from Gibernau. Kim Tunell added to the lead at 13:12 off a penalty corner.
Towson got on the board at 16:03 as junior Christina Boarman scored her 20th goal of the season. She is now within two points of tying the Towson career points record (111). The assists on Boarman's goal went to seniors Maureen Meara and Stephanie Kisic.
The Dragons would add two more goals before the half as Ciufo scored her second of the game and Gibernau tallied her first of the contest.
Drexel held a 4-1 advantage at the half and an 11-5 advantage in shots.
Gibernau would score her second goal of the game less than 10 minutes into the second half. Drexel would cap its scoring 62nd minute.
Sophomore Whitney Clugston made four saves for the Tigers while Colleen McAndrew made four saves for the Dragons.
Drexel finished with a 16-8 advantage in shots while both teams recorded eight penalty corners in the contest.
The Tigers will now look for their first CAA Tournament win ever.
