Pride Tops Tigers, 90-79

TOWSON, Md. ? Hofstra extended its current win streak to six and put a stop to Towson's six-game home victory streak Saturday night as Charles Jenkins scored a game high 24 points to lead the Pride to a 90-79 victory over the Tigers in the opening Colonial Athletic Association contest for both teams.

The loss evened Towson's record to 4-4 while the Pride improved to 6-1, winning their sixth straight after opening the season with a loss to Clemson.

Hofstra entered the game as the worst free throw shooting team in the CAA, averaging almost 10 misses per game. But the Pride stepped up to the charity stripe against the Tigers and sank 25 of 31 attempts to help spell the difference.

The Tigers got off to a fast start, bolting to a 10-point lead, 12-2. They led by 10 again on Josh Thornton's three-pointer, 19-9, but that's when the Pride began pecking away at Towson's lead.

The Pride rallied with a 12-2 run to tie the score at 21-21 on Cornelius Vines' trey. From that point there were five ties before Jenkins' three-pointer put Hofstra on top 40-37 with 4:12 left in the first half. The Pride never looked back again.

Vines' fifth three-pointer of the half beat the buzzer and sent the Pride into the lockeroom ahead by seven, 49-42.

Miklos Sazabo started Hofstra off in the second half with a three-pointer to give the Pride a 10-point lead. The Tigers spent most of the second half chipping away at Hofstra's lead. Thornton's two free throws at the 7:27 mark cut the Pride's lead to 71-70 but that's as close as Towson would come. Hofstra's biggest lead was the final score.

While Hofstra was hitting its free throws the Tigers couldn't buy one. They missed 13 foul shots, going 16 of 29 from the free throw line. Fifteen of Hofstra's final 19 points were scored at the charity stripe.

Towson shot 59 per cent from the floor in the first half and 33 per cent in the second period. Eight of the Tigers' 20 misses in the second half came in the final six minutes of the game.

Jenkins was 7 of 14 from the field and 8 of 10 from the free throw line in leading all scorers. Vines was 7 of 10 including 6 of 9 from three-point range. He had 21 points. Vines and Jenkins combined to score 45 of Hofstra's 90 points. Greg Washington came off the bench to record a double-double with 11 points and a game high 10 rebounds.

Thornton paced the Tigers with 20 points off the bench. Junior Hairston added 16. Troy Franklin had 13 points to go along with a game high nine assists.

Towson returns to action this Tuesday night when the Tigers host St. Joseph's in a first-ever meeting with the Hawks. The opening tip is scheduled for 7:30 P.M.
