COLLEGE PARK, Md. ? Chelsey Feole's goal that came 3:04 into overtime lifted the #12 Boston College Eagles to a 4-3 victory over the Towson field hockey game on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers (6-2) had scored with 36 seconds left in regulation to force overtime with the Eagles (6-1).
"I thought we played well today," said Coach Michelle Webber. "It was a tough game against a top-20 team and it should help us prepare for what will be a tough conference schedule but I thought we battled well against a very tough team."
Boston College had gotten on the scoreboard first, as the Eagles were awarded a penalty corner just 48 seconds into the contest. Feole scored off an assist from Bob Dirks and Janna Anctil.
Towson got the equalizer in the 25th minute as junior Christina Boarman took a ball in from the top of the circle and beat the keeper high.
Boston College took a 2-1 lead into half time after Dirks took a ball into the circle and snuck one past Tiger goalie Whitney Clugston. The Eagles held a 6-4 advantage in shots at the half.
Towson tied the game at 2-2 in the 40th minute as Boarman sent a ball from the far side into the circle. Senior Maureen Meara settled the ball on the near side and banged it in the net. Clugston came up with several big saves including a glove stop in the 54th minute to keep the game tied up.
Boston College was awarded a penalty stroke in the 56th minute and Emily Kozniuk converted to give the Eagles an advantage.
Boston College held that advantage until with one minute to play Towson was awarded a corner. Boarman took the initial shot and Mariah Schuette was able to put it past the Eagles keeper to tie the game.
That sent the game into overtime and set the stage for Feole's goal in overtime.
Clugston made six saves for the Tigers while Julia Berkowitz made four saves for the Eagles.
Boston College finished the game holding a 14-7 advantage in shots and a 4-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Towson will return to action on Friday, September 26 when the Tigers open their Colonial Athletic Association schedule. The Tigers will face Virginia Commonwealth at 7 p.m. that night.
