TOWSON, Md. - Missy Rohrbaugh recorded the 1,000th dig of her career in the first set as the Tigers fell 3-0 to Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday evening in Colonial Athletic Association play. On senior night Rohrbaugh led the Tigers (8-18, 1-10 CAA) with a match-high 23 digs and became the 13th player in program history to go over the 1,000 dig mark.
"I thought it was very appropriate that on the final home weekend of the year, both of our seniors came up big," said Coach Paul Koncir. "I thought Alysha Fanning had one of her better hitting nights on Friday and Missy came up with a big career milestone tonight and they both have been important this year."
In the first set VCU (20-8, 8-2 CAA) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back for the 25-19 victory. The Rams held the Tigers to a .000 hitting percentage in the second set and claimed a 25-14 victory. The third set proved to be a tough battle between the two squads. VCU opened up a 19-14 lead and extended it 23-19 before the Tigers started their comeback. Trailing 24-20, the Tigers got five straight points behind the service game of Katee Luecke. The two teams would battle through four ties at that point before VCU eventually claimed the 30-28 victory and the win in the match.
In addition to Rohrbaugh's 23 digs, the Tigers got 10 kills and six digs from Britney Loomis. Amanda Halls would contribute 12 digs while Evan Schulz had 13 assists. Luecke posted 10 assists and five digs in the final set. Shelynne Hoyt contributed seven kills and three blocks while Fanning posted a team-high four blocks.
The Rams were led by Lenka Melicharkova's "double-double". She finished with 31 assists, 16 digs and five kills. Michala Kvapilova finished with 12 kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Mariel Frey just missed being the third Ram to record a "double-double" as she posted 14 digs and nine kills.
The Tigers close out the season with three straight matches on the road. Towson's first test in that stretch will come Friday, November 6 against Delaware. Match time in the Bob Carpenter Center is set for 7 p.m.
